Hi I ve got a 8×5 ifor Williams livestock trailer it's around 20 years old but in good order ,little used and always stored inside
It has a problem though when I reverse it up a gradient the brakes jam on.i then have to pull forward and try again sometimes it works other times not.

It probably needs a new damper fitting or possible a new hitch. In the mean time you can stop the brakes coming on when reversing by sticking a piece of wood or metal where you can see the damper goes back and forward. I did this for a couple of years before I got it fixed 🤫 The race joiner from an IAE sheep race fits perfectly;)

When I first started farming our old wooden trailer would have a latch which you could flick over to stop this happening. When we got the metal one there wasn't any latch to stop what is happening to the OP. Not great progress really. Solved the problem by getting rid of the cattle.

Ah, it's a huge progress... I remember that latch. It was a total pain in the ass having to get out and latch it every time you needed to reverse. The modern system works flawlessly. The OP only has a problem because of a worn damper. It won't take 30 minutes to sort it...

Realistically the problem could be a multitude of scenarios.
Check the hitch damper firstly.
If the brakes haven't been serviced for some time then I'd recommend getting this done, trailers that don't get much use usually have brake issues, mostly corrosion issues, poorly adjusted brakes, seizure of the brake components & cables also occasionally the brake lining separates from the shoes causing them to jam .
A decent service & overhaul won't break the bank & will give you peace of mind.

At that age linings are probably off the shoes in any case
You can get a kit that’s already made up just unbolt the old and attach the new

Perhaps it just needs a bit of forward and reverse to free off. I had a new hitch fitted to my 40 year old IW trailer, they had to make up an adaptor plate as the original hitches weren't available. They did a service including all new brake parts which cost a few hundred £'s. The only time I've had problems with that trailer was the day after servicing when the brakes locked up completely and wouldn't go forwards or back..... :banghead:

It was a couple of years back but I think it was around £120 the old brake assembly was in a very bad way so it was the best way. I recommend if you are going to do it get new allan key socket for an impact driver to get bolts out
Mmmm Have bought a new trailer ever year ,and even next one going up ,as already ordered it when collected new one ,is less tahn a tyre and brake refurb and no hassle or time doing it

Had the trailer from new and it was about 12 years old it’s was a tipper . Once I’d sorted the brakes out I sold it for more than I paid for it. I did buy a new tipper a few years previously but didn’t like it as it wasn’t as well built as the old one so I sold that for more than I paid for it also . I think the waiting time was only 4-6 months at the time.
