Finding the odd aphid on spring barley, not used an insecticide for quite a few years now. Anyone else using an insecticide this early in the season. Is Bydv a problem is spring crops?

Loads of winged aphids here now on the spring barley. I hate insecticides but my agronomist recommends karis. Is there a good reason for this? I thought bydv risk was low on spring cereals. Did spray one field but found a large beetle dead the next day which pee'd me off greatly. Any thoughts?

BYDV in theory not an issue post GS31 (some might say BYDV not an issue in spring cereals full stop).
All spring barley I walk has now got flag leaf out so if your's is similar will be a waste of time, money and beneficials.

Yes it makes me wonder because I have never applied insecticide to spring cereals here ever until now. I have never seen any virus problems either. Only ever applied them to winter cereals at end of autumn.
The insecticide will be stopping in the shed.

I’ve been across our seed multiplication are of spring beans twice with Karis in order to control pea and bean weevil. I knew before I did it both times it wouldn’t work. I was right. I really cannot find the justification for using an insecticide anymore, autumn BYDV being an exception but again only if early sown which also brings a heap of other problems.

I remarked on here a while ago that one year in the past there were a lot of spring barley fields round here that got hit by BYDV but it was confined to the variety Blenheim. Caused much bemusement and head scratching in what is a livestock area. Must be 25 years ago ish. Saw a bit of it last year, nowt in between. My rule of thumb is: by the time you've seen it it's too late anyway. Crop grows away from it again. Insecticide on spring barley therefore isn't worth thinking about for BYDV for what is a rare and relatively insignificant event. Better things to worry about.....
