Is the holiday cottage sector going to collapse?

Normal people exist for their holidays and hobbies.
We've got families during school hols and generally retired people (with parent(s)) in term time.
Bookings are ok for next year so far.
Sykes cottages are keen to discount weekly charges to fill the cottages. :(
I'd rather the odd empty week than £100 off every week.
Better to have 2 weeks holiday let than a month residential rent.

If cottage bookings drop off completely we'll have to open them up as long term lets for people kicked out of their homes by the bank. :(

Higher air fares and a weak sterling will like discourage foreign holidays. A lot of Air BNBs run with family labour, electric/heating a smallish percentage of revenue. It may not be at the same heights as the COVID staycation era though.

Every recession usually leads to a bit of a shake out of businesses with too much debt/poorly run. However reading the reviews on Airbnb there are many very well located, well run businesses, with guests who enjoy visiting, they will continue to thrive. In 30 years the leisure/staycation market will be larger than it is today. Can I say that about beef and dairy industries? Wish I could.

Yes, the unknown is how much extra trade domestically due to not going abroad.

Son who works in the city says Airbnb will be in trouble with the higher interest rates because the platform has enabled a massive amount of investment money into the sector and returns will be hit hard meaning theyll loose loads of property’s.

Won't it be a good thing ?
hear loads of moans about villages full of holiday homes and second homes and lots of folk can't afford a home at all let alone a second one or one for a holiday because of the way the planning system is set up
so won't it be a good thing if it falls on its arse ? perhaps a lot will be sold or rented out to folk who need somewhere to live

Scotland is introducing new licensing for holiday lets. To get a license you have to prove you have EPC, insurance, elec/gas check etc. and pay approx. £500-600 per property. You will not be allowed to advertise property without a license. Not a problem (but hassle) for legit properties, but on top of everything else going on I think this will significantly reduce the properties available.

No, folks would rather spend on holidays than food.
Prices need to rise to cover increasing costs though ( sounds a bit like......)
Our agent is dead keen on discounting. They have been told no foooking way.......

World of difference between a second home, and a converted barn on a farm though. Trouble is, in Wales, They're going to be both treated the same for tax....
