What age and has it got the carrora axles rather than than the later JCB axles.
Ours did exactly the same one day when backing out of the shed, rear left wheel seized. Turned out to be a broken tooth on one of the planetary gears in the hub.
Luckily we were only going slow so it didn't hurt the sun gear. New planetary gears werent expensive from vicary plant and it wasn't a big job, couple hours to rebuild.

Ha ha, I’ve seen this to on a matbro planetary gears in the hub mashed up as oil was never checked/changed, needed whole new hub.
Luckily I’m sure a good used hub for a jcb will be easier to come by just done seal on mine which was hub off job was fairly easy 👍🏻

could price up parts but I imagine it will be significantly cheaper just getting used hub

Carraro axles were never fitted for long and only on the early 520-55 so I wouldn't be too confident in getting a hub, you might be lucky but I wouldn't want to put money on it!!!
I can't remember for sure but I think the sun gear is bolted into them so it might be possible to change all the guts in the hut and re use the housing.
