JD 545 Baler

Can anyone help out with this, JD round baler tying arm not engaging. If you lift the tail gate up it sounds like it trips, but the arm itself doesn’t swing round. Same thing with the manual trip on the rope. There’s oil and pressure in the pump. Problem seems to be the little ram in the photo, if I push it up with a bar then the tying arm engages and cycles as it should. Anyone got any easy solutions before I start taking things apart?

Now there’s an idea! Can I literally just plug them into a double acting spool on the tractor or do I need some sort of restrictor valve?
I got so frustrated with the unit on my 550 I extensed/piped the tying ram into the tractor spools

I am a serial bodger though🙈

That's a valve, not a ram.

The rod that the twine arm pushes as it returns to the rest position isn't being pushed far enough (you can adjust is leg to get it right). When it's adjusted right the system runs well, when it's not it can drive you mad.

I ran one for nearly 20 years.

As above that plate is on the end of a rod that needs oiling up to work. First guess is that flap plate isn’t travelling far enough towards the front of the baler and therefore it won’t pump the arm unless you hold the valve up. It should be propping that s shaped bracket the picture connected to the valve. If I remember right that rod was sticky at the start of every season

I guessing the trip has not reset properly?
I might be confusing things but, I seem to remember opening the gate over halfway, apply the hydraulic lock and then power down the gate. The gate won't go down but the belts will tighten and you can trip the tying mech multiple times.

That’s a good idea, easy to put on as much string as you want then, added a kit to mine which was just a damper so it didn’t cut off as quick which was supposed to stop the twine unravelling on dry straw.

Never really worked, wish I had thought of just using a spool and do it manually.
Sorry, can’t write anymore, thinking about this baler is bringing back my nervous twitch.

in 'the land of bodgers I am king'🥰

blocked my 550 so badly 6:30pm Thursday I left the fekkin thing in the field😭...two windrows left🙈
This is going to sound ridiculous to those that have never used one of these balers, but those that have will know what desperation feels like...

As a last resort to finish a job I have been known to get out and manually roll up a little core at the start of the swath for the baler to swallow and get the bale started :bag:

They were a machine of torture. All these youngsters using these recent machines don’t know they are born. You couldn’t even cut in or out of rows without blocking the corners of the reel.

That feeling of doom when the bloody thing decides to net a bale as you're turning round at the end, and you just know that trying to start a bale on the wispy bit at the start of a new swath will block it :X3:
