Sorry if this is in the wrong thread but looking at direct drills as I have got a capital grant for purchase of a drill. Is anybody successfully using a 750a on cultivated/ low disturbance sumo trio worked land? Is the drill able to work on not so firm ground? Thanks in advance Ben.

Yes, no problem. Won’t go straight onto ploughing but pretty much everything else is doable.

Thanks, I did drill 40 acres this spring with one but it was straight into stubble. I was going to try it again on some sumo’ed this autum but weather didn’t allow me to try it.

Try and get a firm seedbed before you drill.
This season we drilled two paddocks behind a vaderstad opus/topdown and didn’t get great results. Other paddocks that are direct drilled or drilled after a pass with Vaderstad carrier very successful.

It will drill into anything if you set it up right. When we bought ours in 2001 they were advertised as an 'All Till drill'

I think if we’re all honest jd had no idea what they were selling in 2001 to the extent they withdrew it for a couple of years and some dealers who were interested in them privately imported them from Spain. it’s only now after the work of Simon chiles etc that they have abit of idea of its potential but are still not interested in any development of the product yes the coulter but not the overall product which is very sad.

I use an 1890 which has the same row units as the 750. It well plant into pretty much any condition but running on firm soil is best. In light flowing soil you’ll have to match ground speed to make sure the furrow wall doesn’t collapse trapping the seed half way up. This row unit is considered a bit of a bench mark regarding seed placement and establishment in western Canada.if your soil type needs any modifications on the drill to work perfect there is a fellow Brit in Kentucky called Phil needham and he sell upgrades and can be found on YouTube with a wealth of information.
