How can the Opposition make hard promises when they don't see the books until elected.
I think whichever party is in Opposition, the shadow chancellor and leader of that party are given a copy of the books at each budget.
Was the 'There is no money' note allegedly left at the Treasury to the new incoming Chancellor Darling (iirc) a true story?

Darling took over from Brown so was following a CoE from his own party.

I think it was actually left by one of Darling's minions to the incoming Con/Dem chancellor at the 2010(?) election after Labour were ousted largely thanks to Gordon Brown's "just some biggoted woman" hot mic episode.

All spending by HMG is open to examination by MPs on request &, more or less, by the public. (y)

All government policies are costed prior to announcement and MPs or peers, of any party, can request factual information on these costs via parliamentary questions. This means the opposition can in effect ask that civil servants produce costings for government policies, so successive governments have held the view that they should be able to ask for the same of opposition policies.

Yes not suggesting it isn't, but there is another thread where one poster is saying that certain caravan dwelling scum are angels, the figures in the article shows how much crime has increased in rural areas.
On this thread it would be nice if they achieved it but we all know nothing will happen
Hang on there sunshine, I live in a caravan well mobile home, are you suggesting I have risen to the top ?

And today he repeats his determination to lower the voting age to 16... :banghead:
My son turns 18 just 2 weeks before the election so he will get to vote for the first time. :ROFLMAO: No idea who he will vote for but he has been bombarded by Labour literature through the post for the last 2 years.

Bit disappointed in Starmer. He is coming across as too cautious and low key. Needs to turn up the ante,be more forceful and look like a Prime Minister in waiting.Isabel Hardman had a good piece in the I today about him saying nothing and being too cautious.

Yep, my cousin's oldest girl is in the same position; though up there they are almost all Plaid by default... :yuck: I am, as you know, not a fan of Labour in general or in particular; that written, a Labour PM seems a given now so I'd rather see a decent one than otherwise.

Starmer himself strikes me as well intentioned, but I found him very dull in person (long before he was in politics), almost mechanical in fact and he doesn't come across any better in the media. And he is a hypocrite. he lacks the inner courage to say what it seems pretty obvious he really thinks.

I'm in the relatively unusual position in the UK of being on the right and yet a republican; Starmer was a self-declared republican from day one, a pretty safe thing to be on the political left - and yet he accepted (rumours are the he even sought) a knighthood... :banghead:

He definitely wants the UK back in the EU, yet he hasn't the courage to say it openly. My guess is that attempting it by increments or stealth will not gain him any support from either passionate Brexiteers or staunch Remainers.

I've a good friend who will stand for Labour on July 4th; he is 'proper' Labour - more or less John Smith style - and found Blair's direction difficult and Corbyn a nightmare. He likes Starmer, agrees with the vast majority of his political positions and thinks he will be a decent PM. However... even he admits that it wouldn't hurt Sir Keir to have a bit of charisma - and fears that there will be a lot of cartoons and sketches drawing the public's attention to the his similarity to John Major.

I think Starmer, with the very best of intentions, will probably do an awful lot of damage to the country, nowhere near as much as Blair achieved, but a great deal nonetheless...
