Lambing later, which tup?

Looking to push half of my ewes to a later lambing next year. Say lambing from the 10 of may.

Want to go terminal and if I have to hold onto the lambs and sell them after xmas. Will hopefully be able to fatten them up inside myself to push them on.

I'm thinking beltex, easier lambing and sell better than most breeds but open to suggestions.

Beltex, or of you want to keep one or two ewe-lambs as replacements, a Texel cross Beltex tup will leave a proportion of lambs that look like Texel crosses.

And if you need to sell your lambs store, Beltex and Texel crosses are far more saleable than many other crosses.

They are lleyn ewes.

Wouldn't the charolais finish a bit quicker?

char. Nice tight skinned one and be nice lambs.

Definitely, by a country mile.👍

However, what’s your market? If it’s as stores, or one of those Northern marts that pay a £20+ Beltex premium, then that might well be the best route to go.

Normally all my lambs go in Aug/Sep Whole reason to lamb later would be to be able to put them inside for 6-8 weeks to sell into the new year. Always seems to be a really good ppk for beltex too. My lambs wont fetch me more than £70 in a really good year. The winters are getting worse and im feeding more than ever, hopefully by lambing later i can cut down the feed bill on the sheep and put it towards fattening the lambs for a better price over the year.

If you’re selling fat then make sure it’s enough p/kg more, because they’ll be 10kg behind.
