I’m exploring the installation of 3 phase into our yard due to an increase in power requirement, largely for a drier and associated plant. My alternative is a generator, which I believe could be the most cost effective. What makes and suppliers of generators of this size do you have experience of and what can you recommend?

Grain plant I am involved in used the warm air from the generator into the intake of one of the driers. From. Memory it saved 5% in diesel. It was an ex hospital Rolls 650hp worked out cheaper to do that than pay for a new high voltage line and transformer. However it sucked in a lot of dust and the murphies didn't stop it in time. They now hire in a couple of genies. The tattie guys would say that when electricity was peaking buying a new JCB generator 40p/unit was the breakeven on it being switched on or not.

I have a AKSA 110kva running a drier, it was a 1/5th of the cost of bringing in a 3ph supply

This one is ok, it has a Chinese built Cummins engine and is Turkish built, but be aware that there are some horrendous cheap ones out there !

They are a good option but it’s another task at harvest to maintain, to keep fuelled and keep the fuel secure but all in all it’s a much cheaper option than a mains supply

We ran a 350kva genset for while we got good hire rate for long term hire i think we ran it for a couple of years or more and the hire company did good job looking after us with repairs , servicing etc and I know a couple of farmers who just hire in a large generator for harvest , if it not needed year round that would be good way to go i would make some enquiries about long term hire just to see the cost , the servicing cost will be pretty high if your cranking the hrs on one

Stuart power are the boys, but be aware, I have run some figures, all generators are good at producing cheap power but only when they are running near full load. The rest of the time they can be quite expensive
