Laser level

Considering getting a rotary laser level to help grade a shed site I am doing and also for helping with drainage we do. Will only be used at home so was looking at the cheaper ones.

Anyone got any experience of laser-level.co.uk?

This is an entry level kit I was considering

https://www.laser-level.co.uk/fre-205-ek-112r-auto-rotary-laser-level.html

Are digital laser detectors necessary?

Any other advice appreciated.
I bought that same kit from laser-level.co.uk about 4 years ago, hasn't ever given any bother, has done everything I wanted to, I probably should have had it calibrated by now, but set out a shed with it late last year and it was bang on.
Can be a bit of a faff setting gradients, having to measure a distance away from it then adjust it up and down to the receiver, but once you get into the swing of it its not too bad.

Don't anything about digital receivers, guessing more sensitive?

@miniconnect thanks.

Sound ideal for the yard work however setting the grade like that doesn't sound great for drainage work.
It's not too bad it'll come with a little remote control, if you want say 20mm fall in 10m you just measure 10m away, adjust staff 20mm and use the remote to move the x and y axis up or down. (Or that's how I do it, Maybe an easier way)

I hired a fancy one before I bought one, it had lots of buttons and would need an hour reading the manual to set a gradient.

Say you set it at 10m away will it keep that grade going further away from the unit or do you have to manually reset it every time?

Sorry I have never used one before.

Got one similar from same firm, been fine. Move up one price point if you can away from cheapest one, better accuracy, longer battery life, trade use rated, etc.

I have the older type of that laser bought it years ago on new eBay and it’s been faultless runs for days on double a batteries or rechargeable as for setting the slope it’s really quite straightforward numerous different ways of doing it depending on the circumstances so I would say a good buy incidentally I have just bought a new model topcon unit and it is a very good level but maybe too good for its own good? Only used it a few times but it is almost too accurate for my purpose as it detects being off level and switches itself off too easily which on a very accurate building job is maybe good but tracking a digger within twenty metres off it in a field and it says no,,,so not so good for drainage work ( I still use my old one a lot and comparing the two the old one is dead accurate despite never having a calibration)

Yes it'll maintain the grade as far as the receiver can pick it up, we have one very similar and once you've set the grade a few times it's fairly easy.

You need to spend a fair bit more money to get one where you programme the grade into the laser, for what we do that style works well.

http://www.northernsurveysupplies.com I recommend these lads.(prices on the net are inclusive of vat) Give them a ring and ask for Neil. I bought a topcon RL H4C from them and went for the digital receiver. It's very handy because you know how many mm off you are rather than just up a bit or down a bit. Mine has manual grade which means you have a bit of maths to do to work out the fall and set accordingly. I'd love one where you type in the grade and go but they are double the price.
When I bought mine I thought it was an extravagant toy but it's amazing how many times I've used it. Just don't tell your neighbors you have one or it will be borrowed a lot.

Hi Kenny,
Understandably I will be very careful that this reply does not sound like a spam promotion...

The FRE-205 is a great horizontal mid range laser and will be ideal for all manner of horizontal levelling and setting slopes / gradients. It's been sold for a number of years and is well supported. It also has a lot of features for the money.

There are significantly more expensive models sold on both our site and others and they tend to offer higher IP ratings, official drop test ratings and longer warranties.

All we do all day long is sell laser levels. Lots of other companies sell all manner of tools but we just focus on lasers. We try and offer a range of lasers to cater for most customers budgets and the features they require.

In short (and as a couple of other members have mentioned on here), we are not going to carry a product which is no good as it will simply result in it being returned. That is no help to you and certainly no help to us :)

If anyone else has any questions (baring in mind my replies cannot appear as being spam or an advertising promotion) I am happy to help.

Best regards

our Topcon duel grade laser has just winked up.
nothing beats working out a gradient say 100 metres 1m fall so a 1 in 100, look it up on the chart type the % gradient in and its sets the fall bang on. comes up with e.03 and does nothing

Unfortunately we have never sold Topcon lasers but it sounds as if your True grade laser simply cannot calculate the correct slope in relation to it's current position. It would typically suggest it has received a knock or bang which has caused it to not level correctly. I would also be wary about it being able to correctly calculate horizontal level when not in grade mode.

I think you would need to book it in with a Topcon repair centre for them to have it looked at. Your first point of call would be to contact the Topcon agent that supplied the laser and they should be able to advise further.

If they are no longer around or it was bought second hand etc... you could try: https://jbsalessurveyequipment.co.uk/
We have no experience of using these guys personally but I do know they have been around for 30 or so years, specialise in Topcon and know there stuff.

Hope this helps.
