Laser levels

I've got quite a big yard to sort out, and need to get the levels right obviously, as they are all over the place at the moment.

Any recommendations for a laser level? Or am I better off hiring? Yard is approx 80m by 40m.

Buy one , you'll use it all the time, i boiht a datum for yard, best thing ever, use it for alot of things, even hanging double gates etc so they even.

Did all my yards here with it, similar size.

Plus one, very handy things to have about if you can afford it, handy for ditching and trenching too.

We’ve a dewault green laser with a receiver, works great. Handy thing for hanging double gates or sticking up walls ect.

A water level is a cheap alternative as you can go under and through things without being line-of-sight.
Not that I’d disagree on a laser level with a staff sounder but better units to do accurate over distances are not cheap.
Cheapies could render what you think of as level, checked on a back-sight may well be 25mm off
I have a Cowley level which I’m used to but it takes two people to work it. One on the level and one on the staff.
Don’t forget to put in a ‘Datum’ peg. This will help in a yard as it can be out of machinery's reach and can be referred to over time.
If you write your levels down in a note pad you can refer back to the datum at any time along with calculating falls & rises over specific distances.
1:40 or 1:60 is easy to do then using a pencil and calculator rather than guestimating.

Most specify accuracy over distance. Mine is plus minus 2mm over 30m, even at 5mm over a 100m yard...if you can grade to that...you in the wrong job farming.

Water levels...grrr, its 2024...over a 100m yard youd need decent size pipe to overcome inside resistance and airlocks....crazy talk.

Datum was about 700 oz dolla, so 350 quid...cheap.

The green lazer is nice when doing inside jobs as you can throw levels around quite nicely.

I used it to build my cattle yards as the yard is sloped in 2 stages and wanted a 20mm drop on each stage, it appears flat to the naked eye.

The only people who dont have them are tight people...like my neighbours..who borrow mine.

Stop being tight...nothing screams scrooge more than borrowing a lazer level.

I bought a spectra a while ago. Purely because the one I borrowed before of a contractor was a spectra. I did opt for the millimeter receiver instead of the regular 5 mm. Proper sliding beaconthingy is great when you want to add a centimeter every few meter and that stuff. If I would buy a remote I could used it for slopes.
This set was about €700.

That’s got to be up there in the top 5 speedy purchases after a post on TFF!!

You won’t regret it that’s for sure. Bought my first one 15 years ago for a shed base. Has been used for 4 more sheds since, plus endless numbers of gateways, pipes, ditching, hardstanding, shed extensions etc.

One of those tools you really wonder how you lived without!

I usually have to wait a day for the delivery man to get into gear for my TFF inspired purchases - of which there has been several.
