Getting through the bonfires we have created after substantial hedging and stream clearing works this winter.

is there a law about burning on weekends \ bank holidays?

the fire won’t affect anyone, no stubble to burn etc so it’s purely academic what day of the week it is but I’d rather to doing it if there is a rule saying it to?

are you able to burn at night as well?

We wouldn't burn on a Sunday as a rule but we do have people a few hundred yards away that might be bothered by it (b&b)

If we have a monster fire at night I would try and call the fire brigade first as locals lose their bearings and think it's a house fire.

I would do that anyway, it’s more about the formal law, doubt many would notice it, it’s dry brash

My mate was going to have a large bon fire this week. Rang fire brigade to inform them who politely asked if he wouldn't for the time being
He agreed not to for a couple of weeks but will afterwards as it needs clearing regardless of Corona.

The local fire brigade request that we let them know about any bonfire, largely because the public tend to phone them about what they think is a car fire or whatever.
Personally I wouldn’t have a bonfire on a weekend and certainly not at night; but obviously at the moment most people are at home every day so it is impossible to have a fire when most people are out at work.
We always move and lift with the loadall any long standing piles of brash, to disturb and move on any wildlife before we start a fire.

Somerset Fire asked me not to burn bank holidays and weekends when I asked. Once was linseed straw last September and the other was March just before lockdown burning up hedge laying stuff . Not sure whether that's law or just the view of the person I spoke too?

I believe some areas are banning bbqs also. It's more about courtesy really. Law is you can have one when you want. But I know at the moment with people stuck home and covid affecting breathing they are asking not to have them if possible or have them at night

Be careful you should have a waste operation certification from the environmental agency. Even for burning hedge cutting waste. Be good.

Stating the obvious but having a fire to burn wood / hedge trimmings is not like it used to be.
A lot of common sense needed as society not very forgiving and understanding, some more than other’s.
If ones fire smoke is heading straight for houses I would keep fire very small , or better still move material to be burnt to a more isolated position.
We have a fire going at the moment, well away from houses ,we have not put anything on it over the Easter Weekend, but will carry on burning on it on Tuesday. The original intended fire was huge, so were moving it bit by bit to the smaller fire about 30mtrs away. So far no complaints from walkers, but it only takes one ,to be a complete pain. :banghead:
