It’s Christmas, he’s your son. Stop being a tightwad and give him what he wants. Is it worth you saving a few quid on his present and then him being disappointed that it isn’t exactly what he wants?
If you are that worried about it just give him the money you are prepared to spend and let him get what he wants for himself. BUT if you do that he won’t remember you in the same way when he’s on duty somewhere in the world on a ship ...........
Just think about it, he’s away on service and every time he takes that tool out YOU are with him.
So what’s it going to be? 😉

Don't mind spending on quality just don't want to pay for a name. Looking on their website going to have it engraved with a special message.

I'm on my 2nd (technically 3rd) in 17 years posted on the the new toy day. Got a Wave+ brilliant love it, quite a bit bulkier than my basic one I got as a teenager. In fact I lost it and it went through the combine when it was less than week old and other than a few scratches and a twist that the vice sorted its fine. I got a clip for it so you can keep it in place in your pocket.

On a side note when it got lost in or around the combine i spent a couple of hours walking the rows of straw with a borrowed metal detector i took a big grumpy head and ordered another fancier Charge titanium model with my name engraved on the side. Ordered it begrudgingly and it arrived a few days later. On that very day as I was unloading the last bin full of grain for the season making sure it was properly empty, what dropped out the end of the spout and into the trailer but the leatherman i had lost a few days previously. In 2 weeks I had spent in excess of £300 on multi tools I'll just chalk it down to experience.

My original leatherman was still in good working order but the wire cutter bits were chipped and did not cut any more the new type they can be replaced. The knife completely broke off as I was trying wedge something open. I now keep it in my enduro bike bag for backup.

they are brilliant love them and I don’t worry about killing them as there warranty is also top class
carry a surge and love its size but it needs to be in a belt pouch due to its weight bit its handy for farm work
i Got the pouch off Etsy as as it better quality https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/648...ry=leatherman+surge&ref=sr_gallery-1-22&col=1
don’t by the likes of a wingman as they very poor compared to the wave mut surge supertool charge etc

Nice present and sure he will use it.

I am just curious as to whether he will be allowed it on a Royal Navy ship. I assumed their security would be pretty tight and operating procedures rely on using their tools.
Do be honest I don't know not spoken to him for 4wks due to the nature of the ops only came from a quick text to his mum, when he first got deployed ask pliers adjustable spanner to carry in his pockets from what I can gather others have them either way it will be something to keep

The wife got me a wave in 2007 and I have one from work as well. I have it with me at all times it is so good and useful! Warranty good too as managed to break one of the plier Jaws on my one from work doing something I shouldn't have! Sent it away for repair and they sent me a new one back no questions asked!

Do they not get issued a Lambsfoot pocket knife with a marlin spike anymore? I thought that was common practice but I may have my information off by 70/80 years Either way I love the idea of a multi tool but it would drive me mad the opinel is just right pocket sized for me and if I can’t hammer it’s with the handle or sort it with the blade I’m Giving up

I had a Leatherman Wave about 25 yrs ago and it took some abuse, dead handy thing to have in your pocket, lost it in a field of stubbles while mucking out a baler I think.

Every time I work that field I keep a look out for it, hoping that it will appear on the surface when ploughing or something, though 20yrs in the ground probably would see it knackered.

I have a Wingman now that I was given to replace it but somehow it just isn't as good, tend to leave it in the house for domestic stuff.
