Lime for sheep water

Hiyah,
I was following the thread on how to clear algae from water troughs (I have the same problem even after scrubbing them out), and wanted to know what is safest to add to sheep troughs?
Am I right that copper sulphate is not as safe for sheep and lime is ok?
If so - what type of lime should I use - hydramix or other?
I did a dip stick test and the water is ph6.
All advice and help really appreciated - thanks.

simple, just use smaller water troughs, and particularly when through put is less/they are drinking less swipe it out every now and then to keep clean .

and no copper sulphate isnt safe for stock to drink

the smaller the capacity the better and it will be kept moving /fresher

goldfish...
romans did it......
horse stables did ti for years and was recently made popular again in Peaky Blinders.

Used to have goldfish in a big trough at home, which kept the water very clean. It was the main water trough for the dairy herd at home though, filled from cooler water, so had a big turnover.
Next to the out of parlour feeders, the cows always went for a drink after eating, with cake crumbs on their noses. It would soon have been a mess without something cleaning it.
Over time, those £1 goldfish grew as big as Koi.

I doubt there would be enough food to sustain them in a smaller sheep trough though, and would likely freeze solid in the winter.

Used to put lime in our troughs which are mainly next to hedges after draining them and cleaning out. First day the water was cloudy, next day crystal clear with the lime lying on the bottom, after a month or so back to were it was before with twigs, leaves etc floating on the top. :banghead:
