Hello bit of an odd one. My wife and I farm in kent predominately sheep and a few sucklers and milk calves. Putting feelers out there but do any of the ag colleges/universities/colleges require students to undertake 12 month placements anymore? We have some vet students for lambing but would be keen to offer a 10/12 month placement to young people getting into the industry but we want continuity. Temporary students are very good but lots of training etc to do for a weeks assistance. No real need for tractor driving etc but would be interested in which colleges etc to contact. Thanks in advance of any help.

Hadlow college used too as that's where I went and I did a whole year middle placement. (18 years ago)Be warned though we have stopped taking students here due to the lack of the students actually wanting to learn. All they want is to do is sit on a big shiny tractor and the majority don't even hold a driving license.

We occasionally get students opting for the 4 year "sandwich" course which has a year in industry, but admittedly it isn't many.
Our final year is usually on "block release" so they can be in placement most of the time (last year with COVID, they were in university on Friday, traditionally they have been in for one week out of six).

Harper Adams is the only one (probably) at degree level that has a compulsory placement year.

We have a final year mostly on placement (see above), but expect students to undertake varied placements throughout their degree to get a breadth of experience throughout the industry (although some do choose to go home for harvest etc). In order to pass your degree, you should have completed 960 hours of placement over the three years.

My son left Cirencester 2 years ago now and did a placement 9 months. He didn't do a straight agriculture degree, I don't know if those guys do a longer placement.
@Andy West you could also try Hartpury they offer degree courses, I have had BETEC students from Hartpury and often get requests to have another, have 2 from Lackham at the moment. Driving can be an issue with BETEC they haven't always passed a test being a little younger.

Bg junior went to Hartpury and did really well there and loved it. Have a friend with a son there and one of my milkers has a daughter there on a Rugby scholarship. It is a great place.
I had a lackam student here who started in 2019 for 6 months and ended up staying for 18 (Covid related) he was really good. Now working for a huge business not far from me and really doing well. Hopefully that’s partly due to some of the training we gave him

It certainly is, especially if you like Rugby - there is, of course the challenge of explaining to some of our students that their ag degree should be further up their list of priorities than Rugby Training.......
We still have a working farm too, and I think that helps. Seems like a few places now don't.

Junior likes ruby but had to give it up seriously because of an injury. One day when he was playing with the agric team they ended up training with half the Welsh team. They had been using the uni facilities. Saw the farmers training and joined them.

Should add that what junior learnt at Hartpury paved the way to what he is doing now. It was a fantastic way to start his agricultural education

We do have to give prospective students a bit of a talk about the level of Rugby - we occasionally end up with people who are "the best in their village" coming down several pegs when they don't make it onto any of the teams.
For context - I have an African student who turned down the youth development programme on a SA prermiership RU team to come to us. I think so far, he's just about making the 2nd team.
