Just wanting some advice please- How would I go about getting heifers from York to italy? Got a gent interested (legit as far as I'm aware) in buying a quantity, but wouldn't have a clue where to start with transport/ or if its even possible... would it be better via ship(seems a long way) or via haulier?

The only way live breeding animals can get to Europe now is via Eire. There is no control centre to allow travel via France, thanks to our Brexiteer buddies.

You could try Andrew Ewing from Gretna, who were very helpful in getting a ram across the water for me a few months ago. They do the export paperwork there too, which reduces teh complications at your end, and with your vet (especially if he doesn't do many export papers).
Eileen Ewing does the organisation and the number is:
01461 500345
07957883071

She'd be able to tell you if/when it can be done, and what would be required.

Be aware that currently NI isn't allowing ruminants across from the UK because of the Blue Tongue outbreak, but hopefully that will ease soon. I have another ram to go over and we are planning on moving him before next summer, as it wouldn't surprise us if BT arrived again, shutting down exports.

Just out of interest, I've just been looking at a bill from British Railways for transporting 20 cattle from Carlisle mart to Llandovery station in S Wales, price £20/2s/8d.
About the same time I remember a tenant neighbour moving all his stock and household items from near Valley in Anglesey to a new tenancy in the Wirral by special train.

Sorry, I didn't say the year, 1958.
In the same magazine are photos of bills for land rovers, both for the same farm, 1955 - £598/09/09; 1962 - 799/10/00. An allowance of £350 was made for the trade in, presumably the one bought in 1955.
In 1955 the tax disc was £3/8/9 and in '62 it had increased to £15.

l think brexit will have made things very difficult today, back in the 1970-80-90s l sold pedigree heifers to France, Portugal, Spain, Italy, Iraq, Iran and kuwait, all flew by air, l sold twenty four heifers to Japan, the buyer wanted me to go with them on ship to look after them, promised one weeks holiday in Japan and free flight home, love to have taken the offer but l was short staffed and had a young family to look after, l sold one bull to go to the Porto Elegro fair in Brazil to represent the British Friesian Breed, sadly the days of free movement of livestock are gone.
