Probably learned i sold it too cheap now.neighbor paying £12 an acre apparently for snetterton power station.our barley was baled in claas quadrants and got 10 an acre.i think 2ft x2ft x8ft.no idea what they weigh though
Nick...

Class quadrants of dry straw usually weigh in the region of 1/3t each, give or take. They are a lot wider than 2' though.

Wheats round here seem to be producing large amounts of straw. I wonder if the perceived shortage and high prices in winter might not appear.

Sorry meant yield.

Weighbridge straw yields are between 1.8-2t per acre sold

Our swaths look like mountains if cut with some moisture but much smaller when cut very dry

Happy with straw return - maybe coukd be higher if I rung every last £ out the buyer but am a firm believer that everyone needs a profit if you want relationships to last

If I wanted max return I would bale and store myself but we simply have better things to do with the time it would take

Graham yielded 3t/ac, Skyfall 2t/ac......That’s from the Baler/buyer, not me, the vendor. He weighs it. Not very strong land either. Pretty surprised really, but glad the buyers are smiling.

Your quite right, times change one day your man might be paying a little extra when things are tight because you let him have a little cheaper when things were tight for him, thats the right way, i found myself looking for new supplier this year and the greed has astounded me !

Relationships have to work for all involved

I’m probably not a seller of straw most years but in the years when the price makes the hassle and om loss worthwhile I want to be able to pick up the phone to a known qty and get a fair price

I think its criminal chopping straw this year with so many people short.was told a story only this week of a grain trader somewhere down the west country who would not buy grain from farmers chopping straw.its getting a desperate situation and can see things not ending well for some people

Suprised to see a committed direct driller baling his valuable crop residue and soil food :)

I would normally chop all the wheat straw, but I'm baling the lot this year, hopefully back to chopping for the foreseable future...

A friend of mine has a contract combining job on a neighbouring farm run by agents, he refused to cut it if they persisted with chopping it, the agents agreed not to and there's a few more loads heading off where it's needed.
