how late can i go - would next week be too late here in the ease on very free draining sandy gravel

planning on DD with verdo disc drill then flat roll in to spring barley stubble . barley sprayed off pre harvest so still clean .

Moisture and warmth is more important than date.
Having said that, the date often dictates moisture and warmth!!
There's a lot grown round here, always reccomended to get it in by the end of August, but 2nd even 3rd week of September does well if the conditions are right, but you can only know that for definite with hindsight.

Infact you could sow 30 or 40 kilos of barley in with it to add abit of winter cover /protection from weather.
But I do concede you are a wee bit further north than us

It’ll be fine, just need to be careful of the weed burden. It might be quite dirty and slow to get going next year but mowing it should sort it. I’ve had more luck with spring establishment undersowing a cereal crop.

definitely do not need thick patches of volunteers coming up and smothering the lucerne.
ploughing gets rid of the potentially thick volunteers. problem when a quick turn around is needed

whats needed is a low rate of barley sown evenly distributed .

I've got 40ac ear marked to go in next week. Muck on, ground turned over and drilled immediately.
I'll sow it with a low rate of PRG to aid ground cover and fermentation. It'll be fine

I’ve drilled some last Thursday put
Some rye grass & Timothy in with it so fingers crossed just sprayed it off & direct drilled & rolled twice.
