Maize going through cows

Dont spend anymore money chasing a few grains. Would definitely question the yeast as well.

Filter a dung and weigh grains that look uncracked in terms of overall diet I expect it will be insignificant.

After christmas it will get better simply because the digestability will improve in the clamp.

Some countries don’t use a cracker, but they don’t feed the crop in the year it is clamped. So your comment re feeding post Christmas may help digestibility as the corn ferments / cures in the clamp.

I'd day your probably underfeeding for the litres you expect. I count 4kg brewers to equal 1 of a blend. In saying that, if they're holding condition and getting pregnant on that, crack on, feeding more meal only makes the meal man money

Autumn calving, condition looks OK, not many problems when they were pre-served checked.

Hopefully things will improve as we get further back through the clamp. Definitely getting the grass silage checked for protein levels though

We had a similar problem but checked the loads as they came in, spoke to chopper driver and corn cracker was as tight as he could get it. Then we saw the speed he was driving and realised the problem. All that horsepower forcing it through the cracker and doing a terrible job.

Got told to slow down or clear off.

As others have said it will feed better the longer it’s been in the clamp but I would be showing your contractor what a great job he’s done and knocking quite a chunk of his next bill

Have the same issue with static choppers here. Sadly, not a lot you can do about it once it’s in the clamp...

As mentioned the chopper was either not set correct or the driver was going too fast....

Higher protien diets are supposed to help grain feeding as far as I understand.
It does at a glance appear you have an option there, but your ureas say otherwise.

I do know of a contractor that re processed a clamp due to a lack of cracking issue.

Have had issues with grain going through the cows in the past. Leaving maize in the clamp as long as possible before feeding certainty helps.

My maize contractor has put a shredlege “processor” in his chopper. After 2 years of it being used it seems to be the way to go. Every grain is pulped. Even in the crop we cut very late because of the weather.

The downside is it does seem to slow the machine a little and put up fuel use so I have an increase in contracting cost but it is money well spent.

Does it not make the crop harder to compact in the clamp? Especially with the very mature crop? I read somewhere that in trials there was no performance gain from the shredlage, but I would think that where the crop is more mature it must help to get more out of the grain.

Having done shredlege for 2 years (400+ acres) I haven’t noticed any difference in clamping it. There is no doubt that it crushes every grain we do not find any in the muck. That must be an advantage.
