Masses of ticks on sheepdog, best treatment?

Our sheepdog has started coming back from going around the sheep with me covered in ticks. We can expect to remove 10-15 after each run out. Now we have never really seem ticks before on the farm so it is a bit of a worry all round. However, we need to get something on the dog to repel the little buggers. So what is recommended and is known to be effective.

TIA

Mog

I’m sure it’s Bravecto we use,it comes in tablet form and keeps ticks off for three months. Last year one pill did the whole summer for us and we are bad for ticks.
According to the datasheet, Bravecto kills ticks quickly (8 hours) but it still needs them to attach and feed.

I used it once and my bitch had a fit a few hours later. Maybe no connection (she does/did have epilepsy) but never used it again.

5ml of a Deltamethrin p/on ("Spot-on" or "Spotinor") on the shoulder sorts ticks on the sheep for several weeks and if you do it regularly you`ll soon see a difference as sheep act like tick "hoovers" . Lots of ticks "rise" in spring so it`s a good chance now to make a difference. Far better than you or the sheep getting nasty tick-borne disease. If the dog`s picking up that many you need to do something. The 5ml on shoulder job is so quick and easy with a good pour-on gun in a race - 35 day withdrawal period though. Crovect is another option but not so easy to apply , however better withdrawal period (8 days).Good luck!

Dysect is better than Crovect for ticks. 7 week (49 day) withdrawal, but 12 weeks cover. I do my hill lambs when the youngest are about 10 days old - was told that would be OK by their own veterinary officer, because the bottle doesn't say how young you can go. Just spray 20ml down their backs. Young lambs need 2 applications of Crovect to get full tick cover - so 2 gathers.

As you say, protects them from the Spring Rise and they hoover up (and cull) the population reducing the burden

Every man to his own! I know Dysect claims long cover but it`ll not get used here again. First time we used it on newly clipped ewes it took some skin off - they soon changed the label to make sure sheep had been sheared for a few days before application !!! It also is pretty unpleasant if it gets on your skin even if it is by accident. I find Spot-on lasts a bit better than Crovect even when put on a wet lamb.
Must concede that Dysect and Crovect are useful for protection from blowfly though. Just like the ease of use of Spot-on.

I agree with that 100% IMO dysect is horrible stuff, I wouldn't buy it for ourselves but I've used plenty it at other places I've worked, now all it takes is for the lid to come off the bottle and I start reacting to it, instant flushed skin with a feeling the same as sunburn, and then I generally don't sleep properly that night.

Spot on is hopeless for lice but does a fine job for ticks.

Always found if tick in awkward place to get, smoother the critter in vase line and they drop off. Thought was collar or band available that keeps them at bay.
