Massey 3080 Front Axle

Front axle making grating noises - took 4wd shaft off and seems to free-wheel around ok. Stripping down this week - any good breakers around or supplier of spares - only used for drier and light work thanks.

o dear start with the hubs take the end plates off and check them after that good luck do you have a local mf fitter it will save a whole world of pain if he has the proper puller for the king pins

When was the oil changed last?? I would try some new limited slip diff oil before getting so many spanners out.
I know nothing about red tractors. However the green and yellow ones can make a noise if neglected. Changing the oil is a fix.. 🛠

Did you check the couplers on the 4wd shaft for worn splines when you took it off if the noise has stopped with it removed u could be lucky and its something simple.

I have had two where the pinion nut came loose.
the noise was more of rattle though.
i did wonder if it was the autotronic brake engagement that contributed.

Jack the tractor up on the weight frame, not the axle, so the axle can hang. When the wheels lose the weight, check front and rear pivots, probably some wear there. No point repairing the axle without sorting the pivots.

Proper difflock so EP 80/90 is what he needs.

MF tractors from Beauvais do not have limited slip diffs at the front. They have hydraulically actuated full diff locks.

Our 3090 did the same, wore the pivots out despite grease, knackered the spline, cost a fortune to fix. Thankfully last ever red tractor here.

Going to leave it till the winter - just enough on at the mo - thanks for replies - problem is defo in the diff.

Silly question but have you checked the oil level. If you’ve removed the prop it would be best to whip hub covers off and remove the centre gear (if I remember the setup correctly) from epicyclics to stop the wheels spinning the diff
