Matbro TR250 engine cutting out

Good evening

Just wondering if anyone can help. My Matbro TR250 engine keeps cutting out when I put the Shuttle Lever in forward and the same in reverse. I have checked all the fluid levels which are all satisfactory.

Has anyone any suggestions as to what to try next.

Conking out under load sounds like fuel starvation.
Start with the obvious - diesel filter, blow the fuel line back to the tank through with the air line, check the lift pump etc.

Try the wire connections on the electric stop solenoid on the pump. Had the same problem a few years ago when we had a 250. one of the connections was a bit loose and it kept cutting out.

Yes this first, run wires straight from the battery to the stop solenoid and give it a run.

As above. The wires to the stop solenoid seem a bit ‘weak’ somehow.

If it’s that sudden, I agree with those above. Either a short or you don’t have enough electricity to keep the solenoid open.

Does it start under it own battery power and charge properly?

TFF mystery riddles as normal! your making it sound like you have both an engine and a transmission problem now!

Forget the transmission/drive a minute, get it running then use the hydraulics, dead end a service to put engine under some load. Does it stop then? if so check the fuel solenoid wiring then go all through the fuel system for blockages or sucking of air etc.

If it doesn't then, take the steering column apart and look for damaged wires under the column and around the f/r switch, still check the fuel solenoid wires though as common, test the power at the solenoid when transmission is in drive using a test BULB and check the earth, you might have water in a multipin plug that's shorting between circuits?

OR maybe the drive is locked up which would be rare but possible!

Oh and what TR250 is it! in order of age (oldest first)

TR250 ITL 4 speed manual gearstick to left of the seat (JCB axles and transmission)
TR250 twist grip Powershift gears on steering column
TR250-110

disconnect the wires on the fuel solenoid, make up a tempory power feed from 2 core cable, take power off the battery + easiest place is off the starter motor, take the earth off the starter or chassis nearby. add a switch if you want or make it so you can pull wire off easy to stop it (dont leave connected overnight you will burn it out, its a tempory thing to confirm electric supply problem or fuel)

Be aware unless you run the wire via the cab and a switch you will not be able to stop the engine with out getting off, Hense why i say this is TEMPORY for testing purposes or a solution to get the cows fed type thing not a fix.

Not encountered the issue, but could it be a shuttle/rubbed wires issue causing it to select forwards and reverse at the same time?

Ours had stop solenoid issues that caused similar problems to above, turned out to be a combination of dodgy wiring and a solenoid that after over 12000hrs use was just plain wore out.

Matbro were not renowned for their wiring, didn’t help that 5he bloke who did wiring/drew the diagram for it was colour blind as legend has it
