Merlo Hydraulic Oil

The hydraulic pump on my 32.6 is quite noisy until it warms up on these cold mornings we are having. Level is fine and oil and suction filter are fairly fresh. Does anyone use 32 instead of the 46 (I currently use 46)? No doubt we’ll get a freak heatwave if I change the oil.

Do you leave machine to warm up 1st before operating, I probably leave mine 10 mins in this cold weather .

I leave it while I close up the pig gates (5 minutes). I don’t think it warms the oil up a great deal until I start using the boom though. I don’t think it used to be as loud - maybe another issue?

Does it not have a CCLS system like most other things therefore if it idled in the yard all day as it’s not pumping much if any oil around it wont warm up much other than what the gear/charge/steering pump circulates? Obviously you shouldn’t thrash it when cold but it needs 5mins to warn the engine then drive it steadily for next 5-10 mins.

It’s not moving much oil with just the engine. Only makes the noise when moving the boom or using the third service. After ten minutes of proper work back to the normal sound.

I would say so. Mine started doing it with cold oil, it was just a loose clip on the hose from the tank to the pump. Worth checking first, try twisting the hose and see if it turns at the ends, if it does just tighten the clips up or fit new ones.
I’ll check tomorrow. Thanks.

Just worth a check that the hydraulic filter in the tank isn’t sitting directly bellow the return, it used to cause the suction filter to draw the bubbles from the return and give you a kinda cavitation noise.

I think earlier comments of sucking air are correct. I’ve tightened the clips on the suction pipe and ordered a new one (as it feels softer than I think it should be) - could it be collapsing when the oil is cold? I haven’t investigated in the tank yet but I assume there is a pipe that that drops down lower in to the oil - so another potential point for air to get ?

Just check in the tank on some occasions the pipe inside the tank could soften and start to collapse and restrict oil flow.

I’ve just ordered a new bit of pipe. Apparently there’s a gauze filter on the end of it, which I had no idea of. I’ll have the joy of changing it tomorrow.

Connect to a large tipping trailer and tip it to get rid of most of the oil from the tank, makes the job easier!

That got the level down a bit.... the problem was a blocked suction filter. Somehow need to clean the tank out after draining.
