Markets jumped strongly out of the traps again this morning, continuing the sentiment of last week. The Australian harvest has become a stop/start affair due to wet weather and there is enough International tender activity to keep things interesting for now. UK feed wheat remains a hefty discount to French, which seems odd at first glance as the UK is definitely a net importer of wheat again this year – but the shortage is only milling wheat not feed, hence the huge milling premiums now on show and the corresponding need for feed to compete at export parity.

AHDB produced their annual early-bird survey which gives a first snapshot of farmer planting intentions for 2022 harvest. Wheat acreage is forecast up slightly, but growers will be forgiven for not rushing to sell after two poor yielding crops in a row. Spring barley looks like the main casualty this time with cropping expected to fall to its lowest levels in five years.

Have a good week.
