Mycoplasma Bovis Vaccine

Anyone used the vaccine yet? I know of a couple in the southwest trialling it. But from what the Vets have told me it was initially trialled in Scotland. Just wondered if there are any success stories yet. We are aiming to try it.

We looked at trying it earlier in year but took a different attack on pneumonia vaccines for the moment which seems to be helping a lot.

Can I ask what you’ve done differently? Had you tested positive in blood tests for m.bovis? Ours comes about from buying in from so many different farms. As does most people’s I guess.

Our trouble was the same buying in a lot of stores we do everything for IBR now including our breeding cows. We’ve had a lot of mycoplasma positives as well in the past but this last year it’s made a difference using ibr marker vaccine. I wonder if that was the root of the problem also we’ve started using Pruex in the water but that’s a whole other thread.

We’ve started using ibr marker live now to. Although we had very few results come back positive for ibr whenever we had a outbreak. I think that’s helping. But too soon to tell really. That’s on top of a intranasal pneumonia vaccine as well. What’s pruex?

Just been to the vets and picked up enough to do 60 calves, after all the problems we’ve had with mycoplasma the last couple of years I thought it’s got to be worth a try!

Are they out of your own suckler herd? Or bought in dairy x calves?

I put a thread on about this a few months ago, and after speaking to our vet decided it was a no go at the moment.
You need a license to import it and need to show need of use to animal health (ie positive test or post mortem)
Will monitor very closely though

I’ve done a batch 70 calves with it After an outbreak in the previous batch. I think it has generally helped health wise, though still ended up with two with the ear infections and lopsided head, though none with pneumonia issues

Dairy bred calves from numerous markets. It took 3 weeks for the import licence then vaccine was just a couple of days to arrive, about £3.50 a head which if it helps is cheap! Last autumn we lost 25 out of 50 calves to it, can’t carry on like that!

Look for pasturella too. Bacterial pneumonia can cause massive temperature spikes very quickly bovalto respi3 looks a good product. MSD have also launched a new rsv+pi3 product. Blood testing and a targeted approach will save you a fortune. Prior to that, a thermometer. Draxxin and NSAID.
