Negotiation on tractor quotes

I'm a dairy farmer who doesn't like machinery a lot so doesn't buy a lot.

My main tractor is up for renewal and I have been gathering a few quotes. How much groom for manoeuvre is there on new tractor quotes. 0,5,10% ? I'm assuming there's some?

Do you normally get more for your money by asking for extras to be thrown in or money off?

Thanks

don't rush, the harder they chase, the keener they are for a deal. Just say 'mm, I will see how that fits in with other quotes'. and wait for them to come back

I did a you get one shot at the price for our last change two came back with really good quotes one other salesman thought he had the deal and asked to quote again but wasn't allowed as he obviously hadn't given me his best price. Also had three it is going to cost roughly this much is it worth me doing a written quote. Tractors in stock can mess this method up a bit.

Not sure what it is like now but 5 months ago it was definitely a buyer's market.

Are you getting the prices for the same tractor or for differant brands , it's not all about price , I've never bought the cheapest price tractor , the dealer I deal with gives great service and never lets me down . I heard a good true story during the summer about a farmer who was shopping around for a new tractor , a dealer 100 miles away beat his local dealer by €3000 , he had dealt with his local dealer for years and had received great service , when he told his local dealer that he was losing the deal the dealer said back to him " That's fair enough but don't ever phone me out of hours again to fix anything for you , I sent a mecanic out to you at 10 pm one night to fix your baler , and we never let you down , the next time it breaks phone you're man 100 miles away."

If that was round here I would tell him to shove it we have enough good dealers without being forced to pay 3000 extra per tractor for decent service.

There actually was a €3 k difference in the two tractors , the point I was making was don't just buy on price . Good dealers are very scarce around here , from my experience the cheapest dealer can't afford to give top service .

We change our loader tractor every 3 to 5 years depending on circumstances over 30 years that could be 30000 extra going to that dealer not counting any other tractors machinery. But as you say I'm not in your part of the country and this thread has went way off topic apologies to OP.

They must be quite desperate ATM to do deals as I would think things must be slower with Brexit.
They usually give you a quote now and say it's the best one !
Only real things you get is little extras
Depends if you are happy with what your being offered for trade in!

That depends on what you asked for when you got the quotes?

I always ask for the best quote first, and don’t give second chances.

If i can get 5% off, is that it, or can i get more? When dealing like this, you never know where the limit is.

That dealer is very very short sighted!!
Does this man have only one tractor and no implements? Does said dealer not charge for parts and service??
I know my local dealer makes his best margin on after sales. As they say ,” there’s always another day “ 3 k is a substantial amount of money.

I work exactly the same way. One price no coming back and saying I can make it sweeter. Also hate this inflating your trade in to increase the cost of the new one. Just be straight about the deal.

I dont know percentages but id haggle until they had nothin more to give. End o day if you save few k its the easiest money youl make this year given current farmgate prices

So you never assume you get the final price first time?

i buy feed from a salesman who always give me best price first. He say he have a list with all his clients, were he duly note who want best price first and take it, who want best price first, but still want to haggle and who only care how many percent the can get off first price.
so everyone get treated how they really want, and we all get the deal he is ready to offer in the end. I think all this discussing price is waste of time.

I'm not sure that there is such a thing as "best price first" its human nature for a salesman to try to get a sensible margin for their company ...pretty sure that if pushed hard enough they can generally do a little better than their "best price"

We get this with fencing quotes, some people want to knock some off hoping to get a “deal” then some people would be offended if I quoted a price then was prepared to knock some off.
