Neighbours septic tank leaking

One of my neighbours septic tank is leaking. I've spoken to them about it but they're reluctant to fix it and basically ignored that it was a problem. It's seeping through the hedge and running into my field. What do I do? Who can I speak to sort it?

LOcal Council drainage people? I suspect they will not want to get involved, but they might point you in the right direction.

Hardly an act of good neighbourliness...

Environment agency? Septic tanks are now 'illegal' they are supposed to be treatment plants since 1st Jan 2020, or scoop it up with the telehandler and return it to them, it is theirs after all.

Old septic tanks that discharged directly into a watercourse are illegal and should have been upgraded otherwise they are fine.

Is it leaking or overflowing - as in full? Environmental health dept of your local council might help as untreated sewage is a public health issue.

offer to suck it out with the slurry tanker, for £75, if the answer is no, tell them you will have to report them

2 brand new houses in the village ,with klagester tanks and long soakaways ,all passed by building control. Ordinary 3600l tanks

What happens when a private house has a sewer tank on the other side of there boundary eg in someone else’s field and discharging into an open burn? Who is responsible? In Scotland if that makes any odds

Trouble these days people buy a house with the old type septic tanks which werent designed to hold all the water from gutters and all the modern household machines and then wonder why it overflows/ needs emptying atleast once a year.

The theory of a septic tank states that this is the case, all solid is digested by bacteria into solutes which pass into the soakaway with the water. Trouble is there's so much bleach etc put into it these days the bacteria don't stand a chance. Nevertheless they still should only need emptying when full of solid so should last a lot longer than a year
