New holland 548 round baler

Hi looking at buying a new holland 548 round baler just looking for people opinions on them

Hi, I have had 2 new Holland br6090 balers, which are basically newer versions if I’m not mistaken, in my opinion they are very good, reliable, simple strong machines, baled over 60 bagels an hour in hay in good swaths and heavy crops before, can’t really be bothered to go that fast any more!! 85hp at the pto seems adequate, will fly all day long with that power up front. The chains and slats can and will wear by about 20,000 bales or so usually, aside from that they are pretty good-in my opinion. Happy with haybob swaths or swaths from a 9m rake.

I have run 2of them,the first did 35,000 the current one on mid 20s .they have caused little trouble if maintained well,not as solid a bale as a mchale but as good as most of the rest ,capable of 70 a hour behind a big rake.

I know it was a different baler but we had a NH 750 and it was a disaster.

I had a br 740 myself, worst thing I’ve ever used, sweat, tears and tantrums!!!

Thanks chris. The 548 new holland baler is 2009 made and has got chains and slates some people say they dont like baling sort grass

Thanks cornish Bob what size bale does the 548 make. Do you have any trouble with it baling short grass

If it’s got the same pickup as the 6090 then I’ve never had a problem with it baling anything to be honest, they do a big solid bale getting on for 4ft6 diameter with a bit of pressure on. If it’s got the bale command electronic control box it’s very easy to increase or decrease pressure at the touch of a button.

Yes they are a bit bigger bale than most,the only time we had trouble baleing short grass was when the bottom of the feed rota housing slowly got bent down,so that with short grass it would miss the rota then build back to the pickup.It had done 30 odd thousand by then though

Thanks cornish Bob someone said that short grass gets stuck in the chains and slates that causes trouble have you ever had this problem

Never had the bed chain jam up ,baled everything over the years from fresh grass through to short straw never had any trouble at all,they do a better bale in a bigger dram though.

Do they do doughnuts too , have the chains ever JAMMED up ,.?

I can’t seem to find a picture of mine in action, will attach a picture of some freshly baled hay that was done by it a few summers ago, pressure set low, but still good bales
