Is it? You sure we don't export high butterfat, premium organic milk and import cheaper stuff? Or import in July and August but export in November and December? I wouldn't know, but capitalism doesn't waste money on costs that it doesn't need to.

We import a fair tonnage of lamb, and also export a similar tonnage - that appears to be a stupid thing, but the cuts are different and that's why - export low quality lamb shoulders and bits that the UK consumer doesn't want, import legs and chops that they do.

granted, but neither does capitalism pay the external costs to society and the environment. I refer to my earlier post, lets have all of Europe's cows in one parish in Staffs.

Not going to trawl back to find that stupid suggestion, which I presume is tongue in cheek. The dairy cows should be optimised between grass and consumer, so as to minimise diesel and costs. That seems to be where they are, reasonably spread across the country. There's more lamb grown up here because the soil and weather doesn't support anything more specialised, and fewer lambs on the grain belts of the southern parts of the country. Like it or not, transport is cheap - perhaps if that were made more expensive then the environment would benefit from fewer transport miles, but who knows?
