Nitrogen yet!!!

Working myself into a bit of a pickle here at the minute re final N on the half of my wheat that is forward and decent
Everything has had 200kg N (50+50+100)
The last 100 was Alzon inhibited urea (lovely stuff) applied 2 weeks ago.
Continuous direct drilled wheat / organic matter increasing / hanslope clay but you could bag and sell the top inch of hybrid composted straw - soil
Typically flag leaf 1-2 inches out , except Kerrin a tad behind.

Just got 5 tissue tests back (based on leaf 2 not whole plant) and N content is a VERY consistent 4.4 ish % across the board. 3.5% is the optimal low end border and forget where excess level is.

i am thinking the last 50 odd kg is not needed in any great hurry if at all..... but historically growing a decent crop of second / continuous wheat on this soil with 160 units an acre is about unheard of......i remember dad was putting 240 units acre (300kg/ha !!) on a pig feed variety called Virtue back in the early mid 80's trying, and occasionally succeeding, to get 9-10t/ha (Virtue was so short it was about unlodgeable).

Second opinions range from a) 30-50 but get on on with it (agronomist) to none (soil scientist) to 80ish (two different high in high out farmers)
Guess i'll settle on 50 when it looks like rain, but leave a tramline or two.....

Started putting last dose on the wheat today ,,,,, wish it was all on yesterday really so that nice shower last night would of taken it in

Did you get much? 0.5mm here last night. Finishing the spring barley today so could do with a bit more. Can you send 15mm over please?

Last 100kg of piamon on WW today just before rain. Flag leaf out and stalk extended at least an inch. No more rain forecast after tomorrow for a week or so. Will be booting towards the end of next week(ish)I would guess.

Not really but it might of been enough to get my linseed which was drilled yesterday going , time will tell , seems ironic now after the work is done how 15mm sounds nice , still not to bad a week , maize in , grass silage clamp full and linseed drilled albeit a couple of weeks late , but nice to try the new to us vaddy rapid ,,,, even better when we only had the 180 hoss puma available and found out she pulled it well enough albeit into a good seedbed

To echo comments above, today seemed like the day to finish fert spreading for the season. Fert spreader washed down and it's been raining nicely most of the afternoon. One less thing to stress about. Feel we've timed it just about right. Wheats ranged from 180 kg/ha (on one or two really bad fields) up to 240 kg/ha on the best bits. Not aiming for milling, but have gone for the higher end of feed N recommendations thinking we might overshoot into bumping up the protein for low grade milling.

finished the last field ww yesterday and been over the bit where we got it wrong and can see stripes to try and even things up. ( why are mistakes always in full view) think the overnight rain which weve had and needed will do as much good. The earlier applied lot ( 10 days ago )could still be seen on top in places, just been in field near house and all washed in ,dogs paws clarted in soil

Still to early for me.

For the crop stage maybe, but once conditions are taken into account I won’t have made the wrong decision.

I am liquid so don’t want to scorch the flag leaf, and at this time of year it is invariably either windy or bright. Saturday was a still dull day and there is no rain forecast for the next 10 days at least. Hence I applied it and then it got washed in. I am happy

On Thursday 26th September, we’re holding a webinar for farmers to go through the guidance, actions and detail for the expanded Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) offer. This was planned for end of May, but had to be delayed due to the general election. We apologise about that.

Farming and Countryside Programme Director, Janet Hughes will be joined by policy leads working on SFI, and colleagues from the Rural Payment Agency and Catchment Sensitive Farming.

This webinar will be...
