On farm safety

Having a flick through evo Farming’s pictures and I notice that they supply hiviz to all their staff which got me thinking.

up till now other than relief milkers it’s just been me or dad or me working with someone so we know where each other is. We’ve got a few more people floating about the place now and safety is something that we all need to take seriously.
Do any others do as above and insist on hiviz?
Does anyone else have a gate and a “car park” to funnel or stop any visitors just appearing where they shouldn’t be?

Unfortunately hi viz doesn’t do much for those with no common sense. Walking behind a reversing vehicle in a blind spot, hi viz won’t be much help, going into a bull pen, ditto, climbing down into a slurry cellar, ditto, I’m sure you get my drift.

i tend to agree i was just wondering if there was any real benefit in the real world. On a side note the planners Just turn up when they like with no notice and walk around to the site :banghead:

Hi Viz, I suppose a bunch of cheap vests are one of the most obvious ways to look like you're doing something, not sure they add much to safety though.
As for visitors, you need a sign at the main gate saying All visitors must report to the office (or where ever suits you) and sign the visitors book - obviously you need one- Putting a contact phone number on it may be a good idea too.
You should really do a basic induction for contractors and staff working on site too.
Most dairy farms round here have a sign in book at the dairy shed.

My wife is an agronomist and says she has to sign in and out at all farms she visits even if she goes nowhere near the yard, its usually done by text saying, I'm here- I've left. She's done inductions at some of the farms too.
