Parts book lists seperate bevel/pinion gearsets for 2wd / 4wd 996

to convert a 2wd box to 4wd would require the 4wd pinion and bevel set, as the bevel pinion has an extended, splined stub on its front end to mate with the coupling going into the transfer box

Is that in the online parts catalogue or do you have a paper copy? I knew it wouldn't be as simple as drilling 4 holes, tapping them, cutting a hole and bolting on a transfer box

How did they do them?

I assume swivel the reduction units 90 degrees and bolt some big front wheels on with dropbox/front diff ratio altered accordingly?
Don't know.....DB John will have to explain. I know absolutely nothing about it, I just thought it may be of interest to those who follow this topic....
I kinda feel I don't really belong here...:ROFLMAO:

Gone up in the world a bit as well i see. Think i would want the wheels set well out wide on slopes.

Simpler than county stuff though and probably better steering lock.

They were originally developed by a Californian company for high clearance veg work. Case took it up at the end producing a number for N America, where the vast bulk were sent. They were certainly never sold as such in Europe.

Not sure what I would do with the thing really, I think the 1394 is a cracking little tractor, but putting big wheels on the front would take away many of the things that makes it such a good little tractor.

It was fine for what it was designed to do thought, I suppose...

The same goes for the 996, which was in the Three Counties Show last year, I don't think it sold?

No mention of another DB peculiarity, the 2D

Possibly the only 2 cylinder engine in the world that actually had 3 pistons....

2 cylinder diesels are inherently inbalanced, and do tend to vibrate unless fitted with a huge, heavy flywheel and counterbalance weights on the crank

to save on weight, and size, DB decided to cast another bore into the sump, under the crankshaft. This was fitted with a cast iron piston which weighed exactly the same as the total weight of the 2 aluminuim pistons "up top"

The cast iron piston ran on an opposing stroke, so as the 2 pistons were going up, it was going down.

Rumour was, it did such a job at balancing the engine, you could balance a coin on the bonnet when the engine was running, such was its smoothness!!!

Is this a genuine conversion, or has someone turned the rear axle and chucked on a pair of large wheels
