If they are unregistered but still usefull/good do they make strong money or are they heavily discounted?
Usually discounted, quite a lot in the past but I would think less so now. To register them with the ISDS costs around 600 so they should be at least that much less (if a buyer wants to register) but obviously for most looking for a work dog that doesn't matter.

Dogs are crazy money, but these sales have always seemed expensive to me. Lot of folk seem keen to get into trialing now and breeding dogs, seen some big prices paid for dogs bred the right way even if they looked a bit average. Anything half decent always seems very strong money, but I think there’s just a lot of folk who can’t train a dog.

It’s relatively easy to make an average dog look half good moving 3 well-dogged sheep around a half acre paddock with some video editing. Then enter it in the sale with a £5k reserve. But then if people are buying them why not?!

The same years ago when there was alwaysafew every week in the Scottish farmer, everyone was a champion going buy the advert, now everyone is a champion going by the video.

Someone asked me for pros and cons of online sales.....

Pro
As a seller you can record something 378 times till it looks right on video

Cons
As a buyer you don't know if the dog has done something 378 times till it gets it right on video.

Don't get me wrong, I'm sure there are plenty that are doing the videos with honesty in mind but there is always the potential for that.

I think the days of a trained dog being worth 1500-2k are gone (for now anyway). I'm sure there are still bargains to be had, but they'll probably need finishing off in training (which probably isn't a bad thing as the new owner and dog will form a different kind of bond to one that's bought trained). If you want something that's going to be right on any kind of sheep farm (hill or lowland) you should be looking at spending towards 3k and possibly more.

Did that guy cant mind his name Mr Bell?, he used to bring afew out for skipton afew years ago just have an acre or so at his house set up for training dogs.
Yes, he was a former horse trainer and used his old horse yard to get them up to speed, very nicely started but anyone I spoke to that bought one said you still had to finish off the training, and almost train them completely. Very rarely did you see the dog drive the sheep away from him in the sale on the field at Skipton.
