I kinda of get what you mean, and you hear it alot when it comes to rape drilling. But by doing the "nothing to lose" method, you are in fact forfeiting the chance to do it properly. So might be worth trying to broadcast plenty of HSS and see what happens. Nothing to lose, and just see what happens over the next 5 weeks or so.

I had half a mind to stick a bit of osr in on some continuous wheat ground. Time was getting on when cut, then needed baling, then carting. Thought about slapping some fss about and seeing what happens for a few pence. But I figured pretty soon I would need to decide if it needed pellets, then if it needed more. Then herbicide of some sort at some point. Point being pretty early you have to decide to invest in the crop or not and I bet I would had ended up with a half arsed crop that would end up similar spending to stronger one......and I would had ballsed up a (whisper it) potentially profitable break crop.
I will do it properly next year.....I hope
Yes I have DD into very wet stubbles in 2012, if I hadn't i wouldn't have planted a thing.Just to chuck a spanner in the works, how will these direct drills work in a very wet autumn.with a wet surface traction will be extremely poor and result in lots of wheel slip.plough and combination drill is pretty much weather proof.has anyone direct drilled in the very wet conditions that may or may not come.id imagine stripdrills may be worse having been looking at them in the last few days, online, requiring 200hp on even the 3m versions.
Nick...
No comment robbie , no munching or holes yet , with the shiny black critters ,He's a beneficial and will be munching away at your flee beetle.
I can't remember his name of the top of my head but my rape is swarming with them.
All my end of August sown rape has been eaten by slugs, is it too late to re drill some or would you say waste of time?

It’s a bit blurry but it seems like it has the wings of a fly not beetle. Looks more like turnip saw fly to me.Are you sure? From @will1594 photo I thought it was a soldier beetle.

What did you use to establish into stripped straw? We put ours in really early no till into chopped and stripped spring barley. Buckwheat and clover companions. Havnt grown any rape for a while so bought in new conventional seed to grow on which has put cost up abit. No insecticide so happy so far but could keel over in the spring from larvae? Done about 180ha.
I know that!!!!!
From the blurry picture I thought it was one of these!!!!View attachment 833132
They come in all sorts of variations of orange and black colouration. My rape is full of them.
