Pneumonia issue, What vaccine to use?

Been having pneumonia issues within calves the last couple months. Now knowing that the virus’s involved is RSV and Pi3, how do people get on with Rispoval Intranasal and would they recommend it? Asking as never used any pneumonia vaccines in the past, Cheers

We use intranasal in all our bought in 2-4 week old calves and it works very well, make sure you order the applicator gun at the same time. It doesn’t offer long term or a very broad range of protection like Bavalto 4 but is very quick acting. If you have been having trouble recently have you changed anything regarding housing etc? This damp still weather is never good news for cattle!

What age are they getting it? We used to have a problem pre-weaning, initially used Rispoval intranasal and on vets advice now use Bovalto Respi intranasal, but think it was only a pricing or availability issue. Both work, no real problems now, gives 12 weeks cover, can give at 9-10 days and immunity from 10 days later.

We’re using too much antibiotics treating calf pneumonia but only about 1/3 of the cost to vaccinate them, I can’t help but feel the money would be better spent improving facility’s here. Or at least that’s the plan for next summer, block calving so I’d need a lot of hutches to use once a season, we’re at 650ft above sea level and very exposed so I’m leaning towards a well designed shed (whatever that is) then at least I can use it at other times of the year.

How do you know what the true cost of pneumonia is compared to vaccination? Long term lung damage, poor growth, risk of death etc

MSD have developed a new intranasal that you can give from a week old under the bovilis banner.

Have you any mycoplasma bovis or pasturella strains circulating? Can't do much on the mycoplasma front short of a special import of vaccine, but if you discover you've got bacterial pneumonia present then bovalto respi3 could be your answer.

Started using the bovalto intranasal and is working well, am doing all calves including beef calves I sell about a month old, had a couple of calves took pneumonia in Sept and was peeved of thinking it wasn't great esp as one calf was very bad but it recovered really quickly after a shot of hexasol, was amazed as normally a calf that bad would be a disaster. All in all I intent to continue with it as have had no bother since( I no I shouldn't say that!!)

Very true I should of been more specific, the issue is only in one shed so all the heifer calves are fine, but you’re quite right the true cost is hard to know. We did vaccinate when we had less cows so used to buy beef calves in, along with all the diseases present wherever they came from. Seem to of had a challenging autumn here with it so far so planning to reassess the vaccination option next spring. I’ve finished calving for 2020.
