What do you expect with tantalising if you bang em in the field they will rot naff all to do with concrete
I'm talking about pre-useless tanalising.
Got an old Gales tan doug fir building which has a lot of failing stanchions, a number of my own 'constructions' using both sawn and peeled tanalised. Lots failing right where they meet the concrete/ground.

Anyway, you're sure, so go right ahead.

youre right of course.
concreting timber in is bad for it full stop. different expansion and contracting soon makes a c rack around and moisture ingress,or dampness gets held there but also oxygen for that damp rot to occur ,which is actually the same as happens in the ground in the area just where it comes out (tanalising wont deal with that white rot at all.thats why it all fails. ) anywhere with stakes gatepost etc. they wont last 5 mins.
even creosote unless its tarry will wash out over time if outdoors. CCA didnt wash out at all,it st5ill had to be done right tho, ie dry wood and pressure to push it in .

So what planning do you need, if any, for a pole barn?

Well, by Brother in law insists they are temporary structures so don`t need any.
You may notice the lower of the two is hidden by the shipping container he keeps the tools in.
The larger version is not visible to anyone except Dick & Dom his neighbours in rural Devonshire who are "not particularly concerned" about PP as they suggested he should do it! :censored:
The smaller one is 50% log store and where he parks the truck and the larger one is his haybarn where he also keeps "Sir Alex" :censored: his Fergie and the "organic meadow hay" for the local horsey folk!

Is there anywhere that you can find poles that are consistently 30 foot or longer, quite few at that. Whenever I've looked they'll send a load of mixed sizes that could be anything.

To be classed as a pole barn you supposed to leave all of the iron work on you removed all of it that you catch a belt or shirt on down the line

I can see my architect being very concerned about the apparent lack of diagonal bracing but maybe that is done with steel ropes not visible in the photographs and the buildings are in an area where they don't get strong winds? Even with the ventilated sides, winds would impose considerable stresses on that design up here in the north. Sorry, but someone had to ask.
