Question for those in agriculture who work outside during winter(that excludes cosy cab tractor drivers)

My favourite cold weather work coat split its zip yesterday. Wonderful timing. Of course it did. We can send men to the moon but we can’t make a zip that lasts. Every coat I’ve ever had dies for the same reason. :banghead:
Try a M65 field jacket they have chunky metal zips that last. Make sure you get one with a liner for cold weather.

If I can keep my feet, neck and head warm then I don’t need lots of clothes. Jeans, t-shirt and a shirt or jumper (not both). If it’s below 5 degrees then a light jacket and if it’s raining then a waterproof jacket, maybe leggings if it’s heavy.
Warm boots or wellies are the best way to start the day.
Somerset is a tropical county though.

Ordinary trousers, shirt and jumper with boiler suit and fleece type jacket or waistcoat on top. Hat.
Mrs W bought me a silk vest recently. I thought it was a bit Herman Goring but it helps a bit as it’s another layer, doesn’t restrict movement, is low friction etc. I never take it off.
I actually get colder at night in bed than when I am up and about. Bedroom unheated, soon be down to about 5 deg c, but heat does my sinuses and trying to heat 2 foot thick damp sandstone just pees money away. Two duvets on.

Feather duvet helps keep warm.

To keep warm in day just some sports direct type thermal leggings and top under the normal clothes does the job.

Xtratuf short wellies are quite insulating but no good for grinding/ welding etc

During winter i wear polo shirt, hoodie, overalls and a body warmer. Always a hat on as the lack of hair means nothing to keep any heat in. And a couple of pairs of socks too. Once I am moving and working I don’t feel the cold so good incentive to work harder. 😉

I do feel like all this gear you lot wear seems minimal which is maybe alright in and around sheds and the forklift
Here’s a pick of us fencing in the beast from the east, only minus 10
It’s the wind that gets us cold, when you finish on a night you are cold to the bone, do this everyday you need good clothing

Currently wearing Norse wear gum boot socks, fagan shearing jeans, heiniger Lochearnhead singlet, heiniger/highway shearing polo shirt, bit of a theme there!
Just now I’m just adding wellies and flexothane trousers, a hoody and a beanie hat.
I’ve got a ridgeline smock for when it does get cold, it’s also great when I’m on the bike.

I find that 2 x pairs of nitrile gloves are much better than 1 pair.
I get Raynauds & my fingertips go from white to purple, I'm too old for this nonsense !
No gloves are warmer than 1 pair.
I have my sleeves up for milking regardless.
A fleece body warmer under my overalls and a normal body warmer over my overalls + a good hat.
My winter wellies are Skellurup Quatro, (Le Chameaux for the Summer)

May I suggest you buy a Icebreaker merino wool top and long johns and try them for yourself before commenting.
I say no more!

A lot of truth in the Scandinavian countries saying , “there is no such thing as bad weather, just poor clothing to cope with it”.
Makes my blood boil when I see Television News readers wearing short sleeve clothes, more appropriate for the summer, while reading the news in winter :banghead: :banghead:
No example whatsoever to the rest of society as to how they should dress for the uk winter.
For. F…s sake they need to remember Britain does have winter:mad::mad:
