Retained afterbirth, pull, leave or cut off? Graphic picture warning

Could anyone give advice In regards to what they believe this could be evident of? Retained placenta or some type of water bag prior to birth possibly? Cow was bagging up, though not fully engorged and beginning to show signs of calving soon. A few days ago I come home from vacation and see this hanging from her but no calf to be found. Her bag is not overly full to her expectations of past calves and has not, to my sight, left the group of cows she usually runs with to attend to a calf if there is one. She has In the past been notorious about hiding her calves for weeks if not almost a month before allowing them into fields. As of today the object hanging has disappeared and a clearish thick vaginal discharged has replaced it.

That is cleansing...of the retained variety....it could of possibly slipped its calf early

That's what I was figuring myself. Still haven't found a calf or seen any buzzards flying indicating a dead calf either though. I figure she has lost the calf somewhere because I check on her about every hour in the attempt to see if she leaves group to go to the calf but over 2 days she hasn't left group that I have seen. No not down to an exact day like I know with my others ones. I moved her to another pasture after her first calf for weaning purposes and there was several bulls in that pasture so I only had a generalized idea of around July to be honest.

Perhaps not calved yet - carrying a dead one , had one this week like that due in march never bagged up scanned twins in september took 3 calves out of her by the march bull it appears due to colour of the calves . Pd her in mid may he said 8 months in calf (put a different bull in to catch AI repeats) but it appears the scanner was right .
