Rolling Bean/Pea/Oat Mix

I have a field of arable silage (beans /peas/oats) mix that was planted pretty badly last autumn, with hind sight we should have left it till the spring as it was just too wet. Its come well enough but is a bit rough for mowing. What would happen to the peas and beans if I rolled it now? Soil is fairly light sandy loam and the forecast is dry and frost free.

An old boy who has long since died once told me that they used to Harrow and roll beans at this time of year with no ill effects. Perhaps try a couple of runs and assess?

I have bought peas, beans and oats separate and am going to mix them and plant for whole cropping
Do you know what % of peas beans and oats were in your mix and did you plant it all at the same depth or did you sow the beans separately and deeper

I think you’d get away with planting them all a good 2 1/2 inches deep. Oats are good for pushing out of the ground and peas and beans will be perfect at that depth.

Organic boyz will harrow the sh1t out of most crops with little ill effect. Rolling beans might be the tricky part once the stalks get stiffer.lots of soybeans rolled here at 4 inches tall but done on a hot day when limp.

Last autumn we spun the beans onto the stubble and cultivated deep with a chisel type cultivator before spinning on the peas and oats and a second pass with a spring tine. The original plan was to drill the peas and oats but it was too wet fro the drill. The mix was by weight about half beans quarter each of peas and oats.

If you are spring drilling then you wouldn't want the beans so deep so I would drill the whole lot together. If you do be aware of how the mix will settle out in the drill once you get started.
