is it the older tin sided fusion? Neighbour had one and it doesn’t like straw especially dry straw. The newer plastic sided fusion and normal ones seem to fly through it and make nice bales

No.
Rotten/dry/brittle/short straw causes them all problems (well all the ones we've ever had anyway).

I have a mchale belt baler and have just baled 1500 straw bales and the wheat straw is short rotten rubbish full of dust. and the only bad bale I’ve had was when I opened it before it had put the net on .

Next door neighbour has a Krone round baler and he has had loads of trouble baling his rotten straw. I think he has given up on it.

If you are baling short smashed straw with little grip try halving your pto speed while maintaining forward speed, only up the pto speed as the net goes in.

I feel his pain.... Been there, still have the t-shirt!

Early morning or late at night with a heavy dew was the only way, or get a quad baler in.
