Ryeland Ram Lamb spilling cud

Hi all,

I have a 5 month old coloured Ryeland ram lamb that I have recently bought in and he has started spilling cud. I find him with green liquid spilled down his chin and small patches on the floor every now and again.

The vet has been called out and assessed he was also in very slight discomfort. We were originally thinking that he had eaten something he perhaps shouldn't have, potentially too much of our hawthorn hedge and has scratched somewhere internally. We are 6 days in to a 10 day pen and strep treatment in case of a localised infection, he also has metacam. No improvement in cud spilling.

Has anyone had any similar experiences?

TIA
James

I get 1-2 a year and never think much of it, put Clikzin on the patches they drool over. Had a 2 year old ewe start doing it last year with cowpat sized cud’s all over the field for no apparent reason

This can happen with some sheep that cannot control their regurgitation properly.
However the most common cause is throat injury from improper use of a drench gun. Where anthelmintics have trace elements added, especially copper, the damaged throat lining can become ulcerated. Poor bolus administration can cause the same problem. Many with this injury do not improve.

Have you taken any land out of production from last autumn?
