Scabivax

Been informed by our vets that they can't get Scabiguard now, the alternative is a vaccine from France called Ecthybel (??) @ £1.93 a dose 🧐 (under the skin, not a scratch).

Do the salt licks, Brinicombe type licks work? Has anyone stopped using the vaccine in the past without some serious implications on the lambs?

I haven't got any big issues, I only use the tubby "fro but" lick bucket for the past 6 years and haven't had any problems,
get the odd lamb with small bumps around the lips but nothing major.
( BTW the ewes don't normally touch them , but put in an upside down ring feeder if having problems form ewes)
used to get some terrible cases when i used scabivax

yes we stopped using it after maybe 20 years ,started off just stopping lambs at day old , and just did ewes pre lambing , now stopped ewes , think vaccine brings in different strains that give more issues , still get orf but Himalayan salt licks sort it ,ewes built up natural immunity over time to the strain on our farm , rarely get issues apart from odd swollen teat , 5ml betamox and pain relief sorts that .was a big decision but one that worked , only thing is we breed own replacements buying in bought in ewes maybe different scenario

We stopped using it a few years ago when we couldn’t get the vaccine and went to Denis brincombe fro but tubbys, have a couple of lambs each year with a couple of little scabs but nothing serious, never even think of buying the vaccine now

We saw a couple of the pet lambs with a dot last year after not seeing any for years. Decided to vaccinate the ones on the machine this year and just seemed make the situation worse. Anything that was vaccinated seemed to get a facial outbreak. We put salt licks out , DB buckets, super soft teats, removed anything chewy, nothing worked except time . The only thing that seemed to hold it in check and stop further spread on the face was washing their faces daily in 1:250 solution of f10 but doing 60-80 / day is a bit of a pain.
Don’t think I’ll vaccinate next year and will put the pet lambs on slats .
don’t seem to get an issue with the lambs on ewes but they go out pretty quickly.

only reason i would vax now is to cover selling lambs as breeders in first year ,but even then after weaning (so you dont get an outbreak around sale day)

It's all a academic anyway because the Scabivax replacement was unavailable.
I've got lumps of rock salt dotted about, and the lambs spend a lot of time on it. We have been using Scabivax for 15yrs, I reckon, and it was a hateful job doing every lamb at turn-out. As above, always had plenty of lambs with dry crusts and a few ewes with a bit on their teats, we will see...

David how much rock salt do you put out ? Do you put it on the ground or in a container ? And do you put it by a water trough ? Thanks
