Scanned Young’s and olds today, mixed bag and dissapointed with the ewe lambs, 264 averaged around 96%, quite a bit back from last year, some well raddled 50+kg ewe lambs empty :banghead:
The olds stole the show again, broker Glamorgan’s, 173.5% (y) Exlana ram by himself had 3 empty and 174%, 3x BFL rams on the same amount of ewes over the hedge did 173% with 1 empty (y)

Ah well should have an easier lambing this year
145% last year
The top line are hill ewes mostly tupped on the hill
The next line includes about 130 mostly suff X welsh but also about 40 thin ewes got in off the hill when we fluked them and some brokers
We bolused just over half the suffX ewes, which made no difference,in fact they scanned slightly worse than the non bolused

What boluses did you use?

What boluses did you use?
Mayo 5 in 1, had bloods done from some of the suffX ewes, came back low in iodine, 5 marginally low in copper and one slightly low in selenium.
Vet said that iodine, which was what he seemed to be most concerned about was affected by the diet (they were on the hill)at the time of sampling and would need a different test to see if it was long term, he suggested bolusing half to see if it made a difference as it would cost us less!

Son was talking to a couple neighbours today who are also well down on scanning, one with lowland ewes down from 170% to about 137%

Scanned the inside 430 lambing north country mules yesterday.

Smaller Yearlings
0 empty
5 singles
50 doubles
5 Triplets
200%

Big yearlings
1 empty
7 singles
63 doubles
15 triplets
207%

Ewes
5 empty
32 singles
187 doubles
59 triplets
206%

Happy with the results, because not so may triplets as last year ( what was 120) and no quads.

Very happy with this mornings scanning.

Slightly guessing until I go through and log the results on the reader.
Ewe lambs

Empty 20
Single 20
Doubles 20
100%

Ewes

Empty 3
Single 53
Double 108
Trips 34
Quads 3
195%

More multiples than I would ideally like but I’ll take it.

Going back to previous comments re OPA. We’re a brand new flock due to taking the decision to cull everything last year. We chose to go down the MV accredited route as although it’s no guarantee of not buying in a plethora of iceberg diseases it’s as close as you can get in my opinion. I just hope when our initial blood tests come back I’m not disappointed.

cheers for feedback, always nice to here about proper farmer trials

On the other hand, I've found the Mayo boluses quite good. First time using them in August and they were easy to give. The ewes are in big form and put a (badly needed) extra 10% on the scan. They've had a fairly kind, grassy autumn as well, though.

My rather high (5%) empty rate is probably due to the tight tupping period, just 4 weeks.

5% empty is nothing if it means a shorter lambing and if cull ewe prices are reasonable.

Scanned 2 flocks today, bit varied unfortunately.
Hill cheviots, 3/5 of which are shearlings tupped on the hill to the bfl - 137%. (3x3, 205x2, 262x1, 28x0) A bit disappointed in the number of gelds but otherwise, ok for their situation.

Then on to to the cheviots bred pure (a cross between the park and hill type) - 189% (1x4, 34x3, 156x2, 50x1, 7x0). Fairly happy with those. Just the Cheviot mule ewes and hoggs left to scan now.
My hill chevs scanned 135%, half the flock are shearling so sounds about right. The park definitely puts some prolifercy in the mix

That's the view I have taken. I take two weeks off work and my 72 year old dad takes over weeks three and four. Another good reason is I don't drink over lambing, so I'm gasping for a can of beer by the end!

yea same here I don't drink at lambing either, I do know someone though who went out for a night during lambing. His wife had rung him and said she needed a hand lambing a ewe. He came home and tried to lamb a tup :ROFLMAO: true story as well
