Separating wheat and barley in store.

Has anybody tried sugar beet tilts to separate wheat and barley? Plastic sheets would stop air flow and make the crops sweat but would the sugar beet tilt be breathable enough? Unfortunately I don’t have concrete blocks to separate the grains. Any other ideas?

Buy some concrete panels quick if that dosnt stack up take one of the crops to the local grain store.

Our neighbours used to use sheets of hessian, or perhaps that's what sugar beet tilts are? Worked very well.

We used to use Hessian sheets to separate wheat and oilseed rape, still have them just in case. Worked fine, they are enormous sheets though.

Tbh I've only seen them used once and I'm 99% sure that they bought sheets and it looks as though they were glued together to fit the shed. Must have been bloody good glue because they've never come apart since the mid 80's.

Why not use the covers used on silage pits? Quite tough & breathable.

We have had rolls of hessian from https://www.austinltd.co.uk/ for covering weldmesh ducts . I think they also do sheets because we covered a 18 ft diameter ventilated bin floor with one piece to stop osr trickling through, that was a while ago though but I am sure they supplied it.

weve used hessian sheets or terram membrane. less miceproblems with terram. ok for air.

Mega mouse house using Hessian sheets.
I had a couple made, was iirc a good couple hundred quid each.
Burned them years ago as they got eaten to buggery on the crops, and in storage hanging from the roof.
Wouldn't bother again.

You could use straw bales (as in Hesstons or Quadrants etc.), although there would be a lot of wasted space as you would not get full depth either side.

If you have mice in your grain store then I guess so. We have successfully used straw, I was only passing on my cheap solution to the OP.

Hessian ? next thing you will be forming steel mesh into circles, and hanging the hessian inside it to make grain bins. Don't ask me to come and shovel inside the bin even though I do have a lot of experience.
