Shrewsbury LA, stuck in the dark ages?

Popped to Shewsbury Auction today and dropped of some cull ewes. Herself was with me, and went wandering off up the Lairage and came back to me washing off the trailer, and said there are some little weanlings in today, so after a quick look, we decided to come back and try on a couple of bunches.

Managed to get small bunch and then Herself went to pay while I went around. She popped out to me to say that they still cannot deal with Business Debit cards, without charging 2% for the privilege... !!!!! Really quite bizarre to seeing cheque books out like it was 20 years ago... I would struggle to recall where mine is right now.

Happily, she was told to put the "cheque in the post" as we are known customers. This really does seem weird in 2022.

Any other auctioneers still doing this, or is it a result of the financial problems of a few years ago?

I thought it was just credit cards they had a charge for? Iv paid on debit card there a few times and if Iv been charged 2% I didn’t notice 😂

You have to remember that the auctions are only getting 3.5-4% off the payment. If the card company is charging them 2% to handle the payment, that half their income.

Maybe so.... Other auctions seem to absorb the cost, or have some arrangement with the card companies?
Maybe they charge higher commission rates and can stand the loss. Maybe they haven’t realised yet (wouldn’t surprise me). Unlikely to have better interchange rates though as they don’t vary that much however big you are - remember the Amazon/ Visa battle last year?

Business cards have a far higher interchange fee than personal ones too - fairly sure that’s a recent change (maybe even late January 2020).
Cashier at local market said at onetime it was a set fee per transaction but changed about the time you quoted. They charge 0.8% on Business Debit Cards, 1.8% on Business Credit Cards.
