Silage ration to freisian steers

Have chance of some freisian bull calves this time so I was thinking about ringing them. Not really set up for bulls. Have plenty of silage so was wanting to feed that too. Wondering if anyone else does this? If so what are you feeding etc. Thanks

They won't eat much silage this side of Christmas though will they- if they are bucket calves

We feed ours ad-lib top quality silage with 1.5-2kg of a 14% blend in the morning and they average 1.2kg per day comfortably, the best are at 1.8-1.9. All are sold as stores at 500kg

Is that clamp or baled silage? What age are they at 500kg?
Chopped round bale silage all from new-4 year leys. 14-16 months old, the odd one stays around a bit longer. The same ration is fed to Angus and Hereford x calves and the performance is the same. The main challenge is the native heifers as they put fat on very easily!

I thought friesans would need 2 kg to stay alive? Mine are getting 10kg blend, 8 kg potatoes and handful silage

Big difference between friesians and holsteins though!! Our holsteins get as much silage as they can eat and 10kg of blend fed on top of the silage. They don't eat a lot of silage when getting that much meal.

We were feeding 2kg of a 16% blend a few months ago but they were doing too well, it also saves a few quid a tonne. I always think most people get carried away with feeding to many ingredients, a simple system done well is hard to beat!
