slurry bugs

anyone use them?
thinking to try them in my 700cube lagoon
gets cubicle scrapings and a little straw off the beds in it

does formalin affect their performance or kill them off?
what sort of cost per cube?

do the bugs digest the straw?
any fertility benefits to treated slurry?

I sell them I have been for almost 20 years!

Formalin & parlour washings do not have a detrimental effect on the bacteria if added to a lagoon the only problem would be with bacteria & washings being held in a reception pit together for a period of time.

There are a number of benefits, more Nitrogen is one as the bacteria reduces the level of Amonia present. When spread the Nitrogen is in an ideal form to feed the soil microbes. This in turn leads to improved soil health, less scorching of the sward & better regrowth.

There is also less odour, reduced crusting & blockages. Consistent Slurry for spreading. Reduced flies also.

Our product is a single treatment which only needs topping up after emptying of the lagoon. The bacteria in the product is very active and multiply at a very fast rate.

Would they work in an slatted pig shed. We are having problems with crust buildup
Yes, in this situation it is best to mix the bugs with water prior to adding them by pouring them through the slats. If you could create "pools" of water/bacteria on top of the crust this will help the bacteria to dissolve the crust.

In all situations (if possible) agitation helps greatly.

were I work they are currently using bugs in slatted pig sheds with a effect, depending on how thick the crust is to start with you may struggle without agitating it and breaking the crust up first. We had a major issue with crusting last winter to the point you could stand on the crust in alot of places. stirred the rooms and really got the crust broken and removed pumping liquid in before using bugs. seem to have massively reduced the crust to bare minimal now. Unsure which brand of bugs we are using as did a trial between a couple of different versions. As for applying the bugs we do it every 3 weeks mix a bucket full up and using a long funnel shove it though the slatts and under the crust into the liquid. takes a couple of hours to do them all but a hella lot easier than stirring the rooms from bitter experience

I’d recommend slurry bugs in most slurry stores; made a huge difference when it came to spreading with umbilical. Saved a good amount of time and fuel on agitation too. Experienced seeing bugs work in dairy and beef slurry.

Safety note: Be VERY careful about adequate ventilation when agitating under slats, and keep people and animals well away.

Thinking about adding slurry bugs to help breakdown a crust on an above ground slurry store. Would this be effective? I can only add from one position (climbing up the ladder and standing in the crate).

I think you have to mix the dry powder in warm water, let them grow a bit, then add them to the liquid bit, under the crust.

best way, mix it up then sprinkle it on the yard in the muck, then scrape and pump to tower as normal

You could add in one spot with my product no problem. The bacteria are very vigorous and will coloinise the store very quickly.

Only one application!

have a slatted pig tank here and put SlurryGold pig bugs in for the last 3 years and now have little or no crust with very little mixing, looked at them all and Farmcare Products Enniskillen have doing this for over 10 years and seem clued up on it all and are down to earth about the do's and do not's of the bugs.
