Smoking Policy

In bad cases, it will last for ever!Several trade in cars, ex stinker owners were traded, as found to be impossible to clean.
It must be hellish persistent then , most smells disapate with time and I’d have thought a good blast of air freshener would help but I can’t say I’ve ever had experience of owning an ex smoker vehicle.
As mentioned earlier, I do have a lad who helps out on odd occasions that smokes in the tractor but can’t sayive noticed it linger for more than a day or two.

I havnt actually smoked since New Year's Eve!

I am told the first month is the hardest.

People who smoke, seriously, if you swap to a vape pen instead, you still get the nicotine but none of the carp from inhaling burning organic materials, it is WAAAY healthier and won't knacker your teeth or sense of smell or lungs quite so badly. Nicotine is addictive and indeed toxic (it has been used as an insecticide in the past) but I don't know if the doses being received from the use of vaping or gum are large enough to be significant in humans. It isn't something to be encouraged but certainly it is much much better than smoking.

The gum is disgusting I can't stand it. All my friends who vape seem to do it twice as much then when they actually smoked

Years ago before the ban I worked on a farm one summer. The full time guys had tractors that only they used. One day I had to pick up one of their tractors, a nearly new jd3650 from one of the outlying farms. Being a youngster I was quite excited at being given a chance to drive one of the good tractors. That was until I got in it! The guy who normally drove it used to chain smoke hamlet cigars, with the windows shut and the aircon on. The stink inside was almost unbearable . I had to sit there for 30 minutes trying not to throw up.
We dont allow smoking in vehicles and buildings now but I do find it annoying when the summer staff drop fag butts on the floor outside the shed doors and also when I find ash inside the tractors but they deny smoking in them! As a non smoker I can tell if one fag has been smoked in a cab, even with the doors and windows open.

Blanket ban, is how it should be. As a non smoker the smell lingers making it unpleasant. however where I used to work, we hired a couple of Romanians to do some tractor driving.... well they clearly didn't understand or speak English, as there was a pile of fag ash and cigarette butts along with a lingering smell of smoke for months after. Disgusting

A vape makes me cough far more than a cigarette strangely. I don't really know, I've only had the odd go on one

The cost saving alone is insane. £100 worth of rechargable E cig and buy your fluids and you are away. You will get your lungs and sense of smell back, plus no stinking hands or clothes anymore.

Ok so you don't like the smell of smoke and cigs in a tractor cab. Nobody has mentioned the smell of rancid dog and all the hairs that get everywhere. Tractor I bought had been valeted by the dealer but after a few days when the smell of the valeting stuff had gone and the cab warmed up a bit I realised what the stink was. I had to take the seat out and get all the rubber floor out and scrape out all the matted hair, wash and disinfect everything before I could bear to be in the cab again; and here speaks a livestock farmer! Would never buy a vehicle that had been smoked in or had pets.
Of course that won't worry anybody and that's fine.

Apparently that's more likely if you still smoke fags too. Vaping gives me a sore throat but maybe I'm doing it wrong with too strong a liquid (16mg).

As an employer of a number of staff, some of who smoke, I was wondering what smoking policies you adopt around the farm seeing as it’s an addictive habit.
We operate a blanket “no tolerance” in machines and buildings under the threat of dismissal but allow smoking in open areas. Fair?

No smoking in machines and no second chance. They can smoke on their normal breaks but we don’t allow smoking breaks as well as tea and lunch breaks etc. I’ve never smoked and can’t stand it.

"Vapers" seem to be surrounded by a impenetrable fog, which catches the throat, even outside and several feet away! And thats supposed to be better? Mind you, recent research has stated that it is in fact worse than smoking!

Is that even legal?

Yep, perfectly legal to discriminate against smokers.

M & S insist that all their food suppliers (eg Milk factories) are strictly no smoking on the premises. Don't know if the ban applies to non food suppliers but knowing M & S, I suspect it does.

Milk Link were the same, total smoking ban on their sites.

if you do allow smoking on your premises, you open yourself up to two potential issues.
1. Non smokers will complain about the amount of breaks smokers take
2. How do you know what they're smoking? At the least, they may well be smoking smuggled tobacco. More likely is that they're getting stoned. And if you've got 3 or more smoking weed, one of them will be dealing.

I had to go somewhere the other week with a smoker colleague, he drove a company vehicle and stopped every hour max for a ten minute smoke. Got right on my wick so I drove home and didn't stop.

On Thursday 26th September, we’re holding a webinar for farmers to go through the guidance, actions and detail for the expanded Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) offer. This was planned for end of May, but had to be delayed due to the general election. We apologise about that.
