What is that cover please?
Drilled last of spring barley here today. Mauled in 5% of the field but since rest was perfect it will have to do. Started drilling my little patch 21st Feb. Most done 10-15 march. Seems like a long drag to do not very much. Back on beet to morrow if no rain.

It's forage rape/turnips regrowth. Spraying off got delayed. Luckily sun came out today so pitched it off.

20ac of sugar beet left to drill on my heavy ground, just not dry enough last night,5mm over night,so thats put pay to finishing that job, then to move back on to the last of the spring barley, just over 67ac to drill,on b/g infested ground.
Back on the liquid fert now its drizzling with rain, must make a note, not to apply when the is sun out, rookie mistake :banhappy: :bag:.

Rookie mistake? I used liquid for 15 years or so and timing is always headache. At this time of year scorch won't matter. I came to the conclusion that any applications after GS 31 should be solid. It just feels better!

That's interesting I'm leaning towards liquid but most of the people i have asked say scorch is not an issue? This is against a bit of resistance from others on the farm so i want to be sure. I can still use solid but for the late passes I would like to use the sprayer as i have rowcrops for it and not the tractor.

dont use liquid but know a few who use solid for late dressings to avoid scorch

Beware of applying to a wet leaf that then dries out. That's the worst scorch you'll ever see.

In my experience scorch isn't that damaging but IME it is an issue with later applications. One hears all sorts of advice but any application can scorch because sometimes it is dictated by the subsequent weather which you have no control over. My particular favourite for heavy land was "do it when it is raining"!!

This is way off topic but things that make scorch worse in no particular order are wind, sun, previous pesticide application and frost. Things that reduce scorch are subsequent rain, application technique, I prefer dribble bars with the boom low so the stream of fert doesn't break up before it reaches the crop. Obviously there is a limit to forward speed if you wish to fitful these criteria.
In practice liquid does work fine but as I said in the previous post I wouldn't use it after GS 31 because scorch isn't that predictable. I'm sure the manufacturers have data that supports the use of didin and other stablizers but I never used them on grounds of cost. Obviously the few passes the lower the total amount of scorch. Dose rate isn't that important i.e. higher doses of fert don't lead necessarily to more scorch, most fert runs off the plant. Consequently I just used two applications one in early march and one a month later.
My crops were fine, except for one field where I followed Atlantis with liquid. This wasn't a rookie error it was complacency or more likely stupidity which wouldn't be relevant to you. I stopped using liquid on grounds of cost. Others can match urea prices but I never could on a small scale.

Sorry it's off topic,
Bit of a up date and a learning curve why I scorched my first two fields of wheat (had Omex out to reassure me(y)) was due to me having the booms to low,did 200ac that day and it only caught the 1st 2 fields.
But why is it those s*dding fields are the ones everyone can see:banghead:.
