FOCUS: EU steel shortage to persist throughout 2021
The supply shortage in the European steel market, which has been driving up domestic prices since late 2020, will persist until the end of this year at the very least, market sources told Fastmarkets.

Finished steel distributors have said they have been struggling to get the necessary volumes of finished steel from either domestic or overseas suppliers, adding that they do not expect the situation to improve any time soon.

Are UK Farmers concerned about this?

the govt should support steel making if they support anything ? steel making and the coal, supports many other smaller businesses, should never ever be allowed to fall into foreign hands ? when you see some of the vast wastes of public money the govt still gives to other counties, please please please put our countries and its people first ?

Exactly. All primary industries should be supported so we don't have to rely on foreign countries to be able to keep warm, cook our tea, build a bridge, feed the nation....I could go on.
Unfortunately, with the present green agenda there is very little chance of these industries being backed. Far easier to export the carbon footprint to China /India/Russia, and rely on imports.

What a way to run a country :scratchhead:

Disagree

we WILL realise we need to make something

When it’s too late. We are sat on 100 plus years worth of coal in the uk , so when the blinkered fools who are making these green policies realise in 20 years time that wind / solar etc ain’t cutting the mustard and we are sat on this vast energy source..... who the hell are we going to get to dig it up?
When we loose an industry we loose the people, the skills, the way of life!!

It all started one day in the past everything comes in circles. Personally I would rather have 100 years of coal under us and use someone else’s up like we have been doing.

Unfortunately competing on a world stage is near impossible. China has cheap labour, cheap dirty energy and very little in the way of rules to follow unlike here.
As for the government supporting the industry this was a no go due to EU rules.
Is it possible now? Who knows.
But surely it makes sense to keep the basics of the country in the hands of this country.

I agree , closing the mines and burning Johnny foreigners while it’s cheaper was a master stroke, but food production is different , the two can not be compared .

Seem expensive on the world stage to me , we should be making our own steel regardless.

Food production will not stop but it will need to change and adapt. The hate brigade against farming is very sad.

There is bad and good but I would argue there is a hell of a lot more good than bad
